The moment’s intensity, the chaos surrounding Markle’s media-loving father, and Kate Middleton, who had just given birth to her third child after a complicated pregnancy, were the perfect storm for explosive altercations between the ladies and their husbands.
The part of the story that no one seems to agree on is — who made who cry. This week, Tom Quinn published a new book, Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants.
A staffer gave their account of the tense interaction. The person, who works for Princess Kate and Prince William, revealed that both ladies were weeping.
The employee stated: “I can tell you that all the papers and commentators got this wrong; the truth is that, as with many of these spats between sisters, brothers, or even sisters-in-law, both sides were upset.”
According to the staffer’s account via Newsweek, Markle is not as innocent as she claimed. The employee revealed that the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex said things they regretted and added: “The truth is that during the discussions about the bridesmaid’s dress, Meghan said a few things she regretted, and Kate said a few things she later regretted, but it was all in the heat of the moment. Both women were crying their eyes out!”
However, Meghan Markle painted another portrait of the exchanges with her sister-in-law in her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
She said the future Queen of England made her cry, and she eventually apologized and brought her flowers.
Oprah asked Meghan Markle about tabloids reporting that she had made Princess Kate cry days before marrying Prince Harry, and she responded by saying: “No, the reverse happened.”
She continued: “It was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something. But she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note apologizing. She did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, to just take accountability for it.”
Markle went on to share her truth: “I think it’s really important for people to understand the truth. But also, I think a lot of it that was fed into by the media — and, look, I would hope that she would have wanted that corrected, and maybe in the same way that the Palace wouldn’t let anybody else negate it, they wouldn’t let her, because she’s a good person.”
Prince Harry gave all the juicy details of the bridesmaid dress debacle in Spare, where he leaked the alleged text messages Kate Middleton sent to Meghan Markle after she made her shed tears.
Prince Harry wrote in his memoir: “A short time later, I arrived home and found Meg on the floor. Sobbing. I was horrified to see [Meghan] so upset, but I didn’t think it was a catastrophe. … Indeed, the next morning, Kate came by with flowers and a card that said she was sorry.”
According to Prince Harry, this is a summary of the dress drama between his wife and sister-in-law: “Meg had a text from Kate. There was apparently a problem with the dresses of the bridesmaids. They needed altering. The dresses were French couture, hand-sewn from measurements only. So it wasn’t a big shock that they might need altering. Meg didn’t reply to Kate straightaway. Yes, she had endless wedding-related texts, but mostly, she was dealing with the chaos surrounding her father. So the next morning, she texted Kate that our tailor was standing at the Palace. His name was Ajay. This wasn’t sufficient. They set up a time to speak that afternoon.”
Many text messages were exchanged between Prince Kate and the Duchess of Sussex. Princess Kate: “Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on at home.”
Meghan Markle: “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since eight a.m. Here. At KP [Kensington Palace]. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other moms are doing?” Princess Kate: “No, all the dresses need to be remade.”
Prince Harry continued in the book by revealing: “Meg asked if Kate knew what was happening with her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses. ‘And the wedding is in four days.'”
In the book, Prince Harry revealed a friendly meeting with Prince William and Kate Middleton after the dress chaos to figure out who leaked the story to the media and made Markle look like the villain in the story. According to Markle, this incident underscores the media’s significant role in shaping public perception of the Royal Family.
According to Prince Harry, King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, spread the rumors that Markle pushed Middleton to tears.
Prince Harry shared some details about the sit down with his brother and sister-in-law: “We went around and around. The list of suspects became vanishingly small. Finally, Willy leaned back and conceded that he and Kate had gone to dinner with Pa [King Charles] and Camilla while we’d been on tour in Australia. And, alas, he said sheepishly, he ‘might’ve’ let it slip and that there’s been strife between the two couples. I put my hand over my face. Meg froze. A heavy silence fell. So now we know. I told Willy you, of all people, should’ve known. He nodded. He knew. More silence. It was time for them to go.”
