Meghan Markle has worked diligently to make a name for herself. The former actress has been making headlines, both in a negative and positive manner.
Markle first gained widespread recognition when she joined the Royal Family. By marrying Prince Harry, Markle became a bona fide star; her charisma, fashion sense, and intelligence captivated millions.
Markle also dominated the media with drama and controversies, as her decision to step down from her royal duties with Prince Harry catapulted the pair to stardom.
The power couple continued to spark interest worldwide with their bombshell decision to share their grievances with the masses.
The sit-down with Oprah Winfrey, the Netflix series, and the book Spare have made the duo the most popular or most talked-about royals in the past decade.
However, Markle has changed the narrative with her decision to become a businesswoman. She has tied herself to Netflix and has launched As Ever, a brand that recently introduced a new wine.
While previous product drops sold out quickly, her latest wine has not, which some experts believe is a positive step for building a sustainable brand.
Despite her fame and dramatic moves, Markle seemed forgettable to Mariah Carey. Ahead of Mariah Carey’s performance at King Charles‘s Sandringham House, she appeared on Hits Radio where she was asked to name a royal she had met and chose not to mention Markle.
Instead, she referenced a different member of the Royal Family. The Grammy winner and R&B legend said: “Fergie [Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York], I thought she was cool.”
This is considered odd because it was not long ago that Markle and Mariah Carey had a face-to-face sit-down for her now-defunct podcast, Archetypes.
The women had a healthy, almost passionate back-and-forth after Markle was called a “diva” by the artist.
In an episode aptly titled The Duality of Diva, Mariah Carey stunned Meghan Markle by saying she is a diva.
Meghan Markle began by explaining her perspective on the term “diva”: “I think that’s really important for people to remember that there might be this persona, and yes, the diva thing, we can play into. It’s not something I connect to.”
However, Mariah Carey was quick to disagree with the Duchess, insisting: “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan…”
A shocked Meghan Markle questioned Mariah Carey: “What kind of diva moments do I give you?” The singer countered, teasing: “Don’t act like…”
Meghan Markle questioned again, with a hint of exasperation: “Can you see me right now?”
Mariah Carey explained her perspective, clarifying that the term was a compliment: “It’s also the visual, it’s the visual. A lot of it is the look, let’s say you, let’s pretend that you weren’t so beautiful and didn’t have the whole thing, and didn’t often have gorgeous ensembles, you wouldn’t maybe get as much diva. I don’t care, I’m like when I can, I’m going to give you diva.”
Meghan Markle then stated her personal association with the word: “That’s the thing, I associate it differently.”
Meghan Markle later continued her account of the conversation in her podcast, reflecting on how she felt at that moment: “My fangirling was tempered today. I kind of think she could tell. But that aside, it was all going swimmingly, really well, until that moment happened, which I don’t know about you, but it stopped me in my tracks. When she called me a diva. You couldn’t see me, obviously, but I started to sweat a little bit and started squirming in my chair in this quiet revolt, like “wait, no, what, how could you? That’s not true, why would you say that?” My mind was genuinely just spinning with what nonsense she must have read or clicked on to make her say that, and I just kept thinking in that moment was my girl crush coming to a quick demise? Does she actually not see it?”
Meghan Markle then detailed how Mariah Carey sensed her discomfort and quickly clarified: “So, she must have felt my nervous laughter, and you would’ve all heard it too, and she jumped straight in to make sure I was crystal clear when she said diva, she was talking about the way that I dress, the posture, the clothing, the quote, unquote fabulousness, as she sees it. She meant diva as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig, I heard it as the word diva as I think of it, but in that moment as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as aspirational, and how one very charged word can mean something different for each of us, it’s mind-blowing to me.”
Meghan Markle concluded her thought by reflecting on the larger meaning of the conversation: “It actually made me realize, and in these episodes as I’ve opened the door for conversations surrounding archetypes that try to hold us back, what I hadn’t considered is that for some, reclaiming the words is what they feel will propel us forward.”
Markle must be stunned by Carey’s deliberate move.
