King Charles III had a simple birthday last week, yet it was fit for a king. At 77, battling cancer, he shows no sign of slowing down, marking the occasion in the rain at a royal engagement with Queen Camilla.

King Charles traveled to South Wales to mark the 200th anniversary of the construction of Cyfarthfa Castle. He was cheered as he cut a cake shaped like the castle.

PEOPLE Magazine had more details about the event: “The King was greeted with cheers — and a special birthday cake — as he celebrated alongside Queen Camilla, 78, in Cyfarthfa Castle in South Wales on Friday, Nov. 14. The gathering brought together members of the local community, including several connected to Charles and Camilla’s patronages, such as The King’s Trust and the Royal Osteoporosis Society. Welsh comedy actress and writer Ruth Jones (who co-created the BBC hit Gavin & Stacey with James Corden) and fashion designer Julien Macdonald were among the notable attendees, along with local businesses like Cocos Coffee and Candles and Enaid Wellness.”

Queen Camilla gave King Charles unique, sentimental gifts, celebrating their life together spanning over two decades. Moreover, The Queen gave him special care on his birthday.

Charles also received wishes from high-profile leaders and was moved by kind messages, handmade cards, and drawings from the British public.

King Charles posed for a photo in a cream raincoat at Sandringham, thanking well-wishers: “77 today! Thank you for the kind words and well wishes on His Majesty’s Birthday.”

The Missing Gift

King Charles received gifts and love from his grandchildren — Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — and their parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

However, the gift King Charles wanted most never arrived. These years have been complicated. He lost both parents, inherited a demanding role after decades of waiting, and soon faced serious health problems.

He has battled cancer and undergone chemotherapy for almost two years. He also made the tough call on his brother, Andrew, after the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

A Royal Plea

Though King Charles has great wealth and a vast estate, what he truly wants is for Prince Harry and Prince William to reconcile, or at least find a truce for his sake and health.

According to the Duke of Sussex, the King begged his sons not to “make [his] final years a misery” during their feud, urging them to reconnect and at least reopen communication.

The Unwilling Heir

Prince Harry is trying to reconcile, but Prince William has put an end to that chapter. He reportedly cannot move past the pain caused by Spare, the Oprah Winfrey interview, and court testimonies exposing his private matters.

His Majesty longs for something he may never receive.
