Prince Harry is dealing with major heartbreak and disappointment as he comes to the painful realization that he has failed Meghan Markle. He was unable to teach her the importance of family ties before now, no matter how imperfect those relationships might be.
This realization comes amid urgent reports that the fragile health of Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, 81, has taken a critical turn after he was rushed to a hospital in the Philippines for emergency surgery. He even fought for his life in the intensive care unit, according to his son, Thomas Markle Jr.
Medical Crisis: “Life Was In Imminent Danger”
Mr. Markle was taken to a local hospital and underwent a complex, three-hour procedure last week. He faced a second surgery to remove a blood clot.
Thomas Markle Jr., 59, who took on the role of his father’s primary caregiver since Mr. Markle suffered a massive stroke in 2022, described the terrifying ordeal: “I took dad to a hospital close to our home and they did various scans and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger. They raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the centre of the city. My dad has undergone emergency surgery. I would ask everyone around the world to keep him in their thoughts.”
Mr. Markle’s daughter, Samantha, 61, believes the immense stress and strain of the last few years have taken a severe toll on her father’s health.
Samantha Markle said: “He is a strong man, but he has been through so much. I am praying that he is strong enough to survive this. My father has been through two heart attacks, a stroke and an earthquake. I hope he can pull through this.”
Harry’s Plea for Forgiveness
Prince Harry’s emotional response is rooted in his own tragic past. As reports surfaced that Meghan Markle’s father was gravely ill, Harry was hoping that Markle would follow in his footsteps, he warned her she would regret not having any compassion for him.
It was not easy, but Harry swallowed his pride and rushed to be by his father’s side when King Charles III announced he had cancer. Even after he was dismissed from a so-called medical procedure, Prince Harry knew he had to do the right thing and be present for his ailing father.
The retired Emmy-award winning Hollywood lighting director, desperately wants Markle to do the same: to forgive and accept that her father is flawed, a wild card, and controversial. Thomas Markle was loving to her, played a crucial role in her life, paid for her education, and is now desperate to reconnect and at least see her again and meet his grandchildren.
Meghan Markle said the following about her father: “He encouraged me. He always believed in me.”
She recalled a heartwarming story on her former lifestyle blog, The Tig, in a post titled “Draw Your Own Box.”
The story reflects her father’s supportive and insightful parenting about her mixed-race identity and evidence of the loving bond they once shared: “This is the same man who took apart two Barbie boxed sets (because you could only buy a white Barbie family or a black one), and made a custom one to bring home to me — his speciality set included a black Barbie mom, a white Ken doll dad, and two kids – one black and one white. I picture him standing there in Toys R Us, moms glaring at him for taking the toys apart, perhaps an employee saying ‘excuse me sir, you can’t do that’ — as my dad carefully separated the boxed sets to make one that echoed my reality. One that showed me that I should (and could) make my own box.”
Prince Harry fears that not rushing to see him is something she might regret for the rest of her life, and he does not wish that pain upon her or his worst enemy. Prince Harry, unfortunately, has had some devastating experiences of losing a parent and is somewhat disappointed that he cannot make her see reason for the time being.
The Last Appeal from the Family
The 81-year-old and his daughter have been estranged since 2018 over a series of scandalous photos; he has never met his son-in-law or grandchildren, Archie, six, or Lilibet, four.
He suffered a massive stroke in 2022, which left him unable to speak. He and his son moved to the Philippines to “escape” the constant reminders of his broken relationship with his daughter.
Mr. Markle previously told The Mail on Sunday: “Every day there was some story or other about Meghan and Harry. It was a constant reminder that my daughter is no longer speaking to me. I still do not understand why she continues to ghost me. My only wish is to see my grandchildren before I die.”
As their father fights for his life, Tom Markle Jr. made a direct emotional appeal to his royal sister, asking her to have compassion. Tom Markle Jr. Said: “My only wish is that Meghan shows my father some compassion. He is literally fighting for his life.I would ask Meg, on a week when she has released a TV show talking about the power of love and family, to reach out to our dad. She needs to start showing the compassion she preaches about.”
Markle’s son said he is facing a lengthy hospital stay followed by a “grueling” recovery. Meghan Markle is reportedly trying her best to reach out to him after days of missed opportunities between the two sides.
It seems she wants to reconnect with her father.
