Meghan Markle‘s deeply personal and poignant letter was delivered to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, last week. According to the other person in the hospital room with the ailing man, the delivery was marked by a noticeable lack of emotion on his daughter’s part. Much like the lawyer she played in Suits, Markle ensured the operation was legal, cold, and precise.
The Surreal Handover: Lawyers, Officials, and A Video Camera
Officials from the embassy in the Philippines, accompanied by the hospital president and flanked by an attorney, hand-delivered the message to her father, who recently underwent multiple surgeries and had his leg amputated.
According to Mr. Markle’s friend and a reporter for the Daily Mail, Caroline Graham, the formal and legal manner in which the document was delivered was surreal: “On Wednesday, Tom was in the middle of a physiotherapy session when the president of the hospital walked into the room with her lawyer, with no warning. I covered his amputated leg with a sheet to preserve his dignity.”
Proof of Delivery: The Duchess Demands Video Evidence
The delivery was treated less like a personal message and more like a legal summons, with the attorney ensuring that everything was documented: “Mr Markle was asked to sign yet another legal document confirming he was about to receive a sealed, personally handed letter. The lawyer said the handover would be videoed and sent to Meghan. The attorney began filming every move and action from that moment, explaining that the Duchess needed evidence that everything went according to her plans.”
Proof of Receipt: It is believed that the video and signed document provide irrefutable evidence that Thomas Markle personally received the letter on a specific date and time, and that the envelope was sealed. Markle made a legal move to prevent any future claims that the letter was tampered with, lost, or never reached him.
Four Hours of Fear: Thomas Markle’s Hesitation
The glaringly white envelope immediately caused Mr. Markle intense anxiety. The reporter detailed his dramatic fear upon receiving the letter: “The letter in its glaringly white envelope lay on his hospital bed. Tom was physically trembling at the sight of the letter, so I asked him whether I should move it. I placed it out of his sight next to his uneaten lunch. For four hours, he fretted about opening the envelope. He was scared it might contain bad news.”
Contents Revealed? A Plea for Reconciliation
Mr. Markle eventually read the letter multiple times; he appeared emotional but never revealed its contents.
Caroline Graham concluded her account by sharing the words of hope she offered to him: “I told him what I’ve told him so many times before. I hope this letter might start the reconciliation he longs for. It still stuns me that he has never met his son-in-law, Prince Harry, nor his grandchildren Archie, six, and Lilibet, four.”
The manner in which Markle handled the situation was to control the narrative and make it possible to pre-emptively counter any future claim by Thomas Markle or the media that the letter was delivered improperly or with ill intent.
Some are wondering whether Prince Harry approves all of these moves as he focuses on reconciliation with his father, King Charles III.
