Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, made some daring moves on behalf of their young children.
However, it all came crashing down very rapidly because of harsh decisions taken by King Charles III and a promise made by the heir, Prince William, forcing the Sussexes to make a giant U-turn to preserve their legacy and protect their children’s dignity and status.
Reports from PEOPLE and The Guardian have confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent much of 2025 in a heated legal battle with the British government and the Palace over the issuance of new British passports for their children.
The Battle For The New British Passports
The children are Americans and received British passports years ago. However, once their grandfather became King, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fought for them to obtain their titles of Prince and Princess.
King Charles was not in a rush to give them the titles; however, once they received their birthright. The motive behind this passport push was not just about travel; it was about the children’s future dignity and status. Sources explained to PEOPLE that the couple wanted the titles legally codified to keep the door open for their children’s future roles.
Prince William’s Firm Rejection
However, Prince William has reportedly firmly shut this door. Insiders close to the Prince of Wales describe him as committed to a monarchy that excludes the “Hollywood royals” and is planning a significantly slimmed-down institution.
An insider said: “William obviously isn’t going to hire Archie and Lilibet. The idea that somehow having a vestigial HRH as a baby later entitles you to be a working royal is beyond parody.”
A Parallel Royal Path
With King Charles and especially Prince William ruling out a future in the monarchy for Lilibet and Archie, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have carved out an alternative path for their children. They have confirmed their visions for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet’s futures by making a telling mention of their son, 6, and daughter, 4, in an impact report last month.
It read: “After five beautiful years, the Archewell Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies. This charitable entity allows the couple and their children to expand upon their global philanthropic endeavors as a family.”
By including Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4, in the official mission of their organization, they are effectively creating a parallel royal house grounded in global philanthropy.
This move has even left some of Harry’s long-time associates “genuinely confused,” because they always pretended that their children would be free to do as they wished, as one pal told the Daily Mail: “Harry and Meghan were always so insistent that their children would be able to make their own way in life without the pressure of expectations or titles. I can’t believe Harry is behind this. It must be Meghan’s influence.”
In two decades, this parallel Royal Family could spark a new battle between the British and American royals.
It will be an extraordinary scene to see Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis dominate the headlines in the UK with their philanthropic endeavors and royal engagements, and Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet take the lead in the United States.
