The unexpected departure of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from the royal family may have caused a bigger impact than one could previously imagine.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to step down from their duties as senior royals have conflicted with the intentions of Prince Charles and his plans for the future of the British monarchy.
According to a royal expert, Nigel Cawthorne, although the heir to the throne intended to minimize the number of working senior and minor royals in general, he still wanted for his second son to be involved in the matters of the monarchy.
Cawthorne furthermore explained that Prince Charles was initially delighted by the marriage of the Sussexes, as he thought it would positively influence the atmosphere not only in Britain but also in the Commonwealth.
The Duke of Cornwall’s idea for reducing the number of working royals is not a new thing, as he reportedly has been contemplating it for more than ten years.
Cawthorne revealed: “He saw that the marriage of the Sussexes brought Harry great happiness and that it created at the same time a new story for the monarchy that resonated deeply both in Britain but also in the Commonwealth and other English-speaking countries if not the world. Only good things could come of that.”
He has also shared: “Prince Charles’s ideas about slimming down the monarchy go back for more than a decade, and it is unlikely that he had any firm ideas about how Harry’s marriage would fit in as and when.”
The royal expert concluded by: “But he was delighted with Meghan and, undoubtedly, would have continued to draw the Sussexes in more and more and would have tried to expand their role within the Firm as much as could be expected.”
However, everything that Prince Charles had planned suddenly changed when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to emigrate to California because there was no such thing as “an absentee HRH.”
Besides, the Duke of Cornwall was most likely personally affected by the decision of the Sussexes as a father.
Cawthorne also claimed that the Prince of Wales believed that for one to be a senior royal meant great privilege, but a lot of responsibilities as well, as he stated that Charles preferred to “dampen a sense of entitlement among royals.”
Harry and Meghan have moved on from their royal past as they try to build an empire.
