Mr. Affleck has revealed intimate details about his struggles with alcoholism and his marriage to Jennifer Garner during an interview on The Howard Stern Show.
Appearing on the popular radio show, actor Ben Affleck, 49, spoke about his marriage to Jennifer Garner, 49, and told listeners he felt “trapped” and was “not happy.”
Affleck was in rehab in 2018, the year he and Garner divorced, after struggling for some time with alcohol addiction.
He opened up about how he would drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch but soon discovered that was not the solution to his unhappy marriage.
He said: “I was like, ‘I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
Affleck believes he may never have gotten sober had he stayed with his ex-wife and claimed they would have been “at each other’s throats.”
Towards the end of their marriage, which lasted 13 years, Affleck and Garner wanted to make things work for their three children, but despite their best efforts, they eventually got divorced.
Affleck also took some time to refute the claims made by the media during their divorce, describing them as “horrible lies.”
Although he still loves and respects Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck told the show host that they “grew apart” and should not be married to each other anymore.
Their marriage ended amicably, despite what Affleck labeled “moments of tension” and some disagreements over the custody of their children.
The actor was keen to add that his ex-wife was a “good mom” and hoped that she also agreed he was a “good dad.”
He confessed: “We did it amicably. We did our best. Did we have moments of tension? Did we have disagreements over custody? Was stuff difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes, but fundamentally it was always underpinned with respect. I knew she was a good mom. I always hoped she knew I was a good dad. I knew I was.”
Jennifer Garner was pictured in Hollywood hours after the interview aired, and she looked stoic as a source close to her revealed that she is unhappy about what was said.
A Jennifer Garner source claimed that Ben Afflecks’s revelations were a slap in the face.
Following the damaging sit-down, a source claimed that Jennifer Garner thought the language used by Affleck had been “disrespectful” towards her.
The pal of the actress revealed: “Jen isn’t particularly happy with Ben’s wording on the subject of why they divorced. He gave an interview saying he felt ‘trapped’ in the marriage, Jen wouldn’t have used that phrase or even opened up publicly like that. It was disrespectful.”
The insider added: “If you think about it, it’s kind of a slap in the face to Jen and their kids.”
Ben Affleck has been dating actress Jennifer Lopez, 52, since April 2021, after the couple rekindled their romance two decades after getting engaged and breaking up in the early 2000s.
Lopez is reportedly angry with Affleck’s statements about his ex-wife.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Garner has been dating 43-year-old businessman John Miller, and the pair have recently moved in together.
