Smith cried as he explained that he was defending his family.
He said: “I’ve been called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people, and I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse, you’ve got to be able to let people talk crazy about you, you have to be able to have people disrespecting you, and you’ve got to smile and pretend that that’s okay.”
He said this, seeming to refer to the incident with Rock. He apologized to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as well as his fellow nominees, saying: “I want to be a vessel for love, and love will make you do crazy things. I hope the Academy invites me back.”
Many have predicted that Rock will sue Smith for millions.
