The Duke of Cornwall, the oldest and the longest-serving heir apparent in British history, has had ample time to prepare for the role of his life.
However, he did not anticipate some of the challenges that have come his way. Prince Charles has an embarrassing and public divorce under his belt. His affair with Camilla Parker Bowles led to multiple intimate messages being leaked to the media.
Prince Charles, already an unpopular figure in the British Monarchy, has been criticized by his son, Prince Harry, who revealed that he failed as a parent.
And most recently, Prince Charles has been scrutinized after it was confirmed that he accepted a $1.2 million donation from relatives of Osama bin Laden for his charities.
According to a royal expert, Prince Charles is aware that he is not loved like Queen Elizabeth and has plans to turn to two other royals who are.
Prince Charles plans to lean heavily on Prince William and Kate Middleton during his reign.
The plan is already in motion, with Middleton and Prince William taking center stage during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have become more powerful and landed more prominent roles in the past months because of Queen Elizabeth’s health issues.
Someday, when Prince Charles takes the throne, Prince William will become Prince of Wales and will be given more responsibilities.
As for Middleton, she will receive the name Princess of Wales, a title last held by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Pauline Maclaran, a professor of marketing and consumer research at Royal Holloway University, claimed that because of Prince William and Middleton’s high favorability with the British people, they would have an increased presence when Prince Charles ascends the throne.
The co-author of Royal Fever: The British Monarchy in Consumer Culture stated: “I think it will be harder for Charles to overcome any obstacles because he is less popular, and that’s why he will shape it so that there’s more of them [members of the Royal Family] involved. And because of Kate and William’s huge popularity, they should be able to weather those moments of storm.”
Some royal experts believe that Prince Charles might end his three-way reign in a surprising way.
The experts at University College London’s Constitution Unit predict that Prince Charles might be king for a brief period of time and eventually make Prince William and Kate Middleton the next King and Queen of England.
The experts said: “Having waited over 60 years as heir apparent, it would be natural for Prince Charles to want to assume the throne and perform the royal duties for which he has spent so long preparing. But it would be equally natural if, after reigning for a few years as an increasingly elderly monarch, he chose to invite parliament to hand on the throne to Prince William.”
This intriguing maneuver could please royal fans.
