This was not the greeting and reaction that Prince Harry wanted. As tension was flaring up in the royal family, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, traveled to England, hoping to have a discussion about the situation.
In an excerpt lifted from The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown, written by Vanity Fair‘s royal reporter Katie Nicholl, it was revealed that in April 2022, Prince Harry made a stop in London with hopes that they could repair the damages they had done with “Megxit” and the bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview.
The power couple visited the royal family prior to flying to the Invictus Games in The Hague, Netherlands.
Prince Harry was equipped with hugs and a boatload of good intentions and received a warm welcome from Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince Harry also brought his good faith and positive suggestions to a meeting that he had scheduled with his father, King Charles, and stepmother Camilla Parker Bowles.
The 15-minute meeting started awkwardly because Prince Harry and Markle arrived late. According to the author, Prince Harry was quick to reveal to his father and stepmother that he wanted to do all that was possible to heal the rift.
Prince Harry suggested that they hire a mediator to help carve the way to a truce. The Duke of Sussex‘s idea of getting an expert to help solve the family issues was received with mockery.
Nicholl cited a family friend who said that King Charles laughed at Prince Harry while Camilla, Queen Consort, spat out her tea.
The royal expert revealed: “Harry went in with hugs and the best of intentions and said he wanted to clear the air. He actually suggested that they use a mediator to try and sort things out, which had Charles somewhat bemused and Camilla spluttering into her tea.”
Nicholl’s source told her that Prince Harry was scolded by his stepmother, who found the recommendation ridiculous.
The book revealed: “Camilla told Harry it was ridiculous and that they were a family and would sort it out between themselves.”
Hours after the disastrous audience, Prince Harry did a surprising interview with the TODAY Show explaining that Queen Elizabeth needed to be protected.
During that interview, Prince Harry had a tough time defining his relationship with King Charles and Prince William.
Since The Queen‘s passing, efforts have been made on both sides to finally reconcile.
