Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are trying to play nice with the other British royals after Queen Elizabeth‘s death. However, King Charles III is making it hard for them to continue on a more positive path.
The new Monarch says the right things publicly about The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but his different moves tell a completely different story.
King Charles started his reign by telling the world how much he loves his son and daughter-in-law in his first major speech. However, he also put some distance between the renegade royals and himself by reminding those paying attention that they are overseas.
For the late Queen‘s vigil, her initials were removed from Prince Harry’s uniform. Even to wear the uniform, Meghan Markle’s husband had to insist because The Sovereign was against the idea.
The California couple was invited and then uninvited to a big event with political figures and dignitaries from around the globe. King Charles did not stop there, Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s children automatically received their new titles after their grandfather ascended to the throne.
However, the same has yet to be done for Archie and Lilbet Diana. Their titles will depend on the content of Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir that is expected to be out in 2023.
An official statement on the title issue read: “Updating live on a website doesn’t quite work. We will be working through updating the website as and when we get information.”
Since the new King envisions a slimmed-down monarchy, the power couple could even lose their UK residence of Frogmore Cottage. King Charles is going for a carrot-and-stick management when it comes to the Sussexes.
For the time being, they are getting the rough end of the stick. One day after signaling that peace was on the horizon, King Charles continued his aggressive approach to dealing with the two rebels.
A royal source told The Telegraph on Monday: “It remains the case that the King loves both of his children. Over the last 16 days or so, there were tremendous flickers of hope. In terms of the future, there is hope of a cause for unity.”
The next day, it was discovered that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been demoted on the British royal family’s website. They used to be near the middle of the list. However, they are now at the bottom, in the same position as disgraced and accused sex offender Prince Andrew.
Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, Prince Michael of Kent, who is out of the royal life, has been removed from the list. King Charles is not treating his younger son with kid gloves like his mother did at the beginning.
While The Queen‘s funeral forced the two sides to go for a public truce, it seems behind closed doors; the situation is still very tense.
The Sussexes reportedly left England the day after the funeral without an agreement about a path forward in the relationship with King Charles.
At this point, real peace in the British royal family might soon become an elusive goal.
