King Charles III wants to do all that he can to reform the British monarchy. However, the process is not easy.
Moreover, challenges are coming from everywhere. The King has to compose with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s rebellious streak.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex left working royal life in January 2020, but they are still keeping the British monarchy on edge.
While living in California, the duo continues giving interviews and talking about their experience with the Royal Family. Some of the statements have been detrimental to the monarchy.
Prince Harry and Markle are not stopping there and have a reality docu-series that is coming soon on Netflix. The father of two still has a memoir, Spare, that is set to be out on January 10.
Many believe that the two projects are not going to be kind to the new Sovereign. The Sussexes have not made real efforts to edit the final products after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September.
With all the moving pieces, King Charles has to find a way to project calmness. However, it is clear that he values the monarchy and will do what it takes to protect it.
That is why he is turning his focus to things that he can control. For example, he has added Princess Anne and Prince Edward as Counselors of State.
The move is considered a snub to Prince Harry and Prince Andrew because their positions in the monarchy are now more tenuous than ever.
The Counselors of State can replace the King in certain capacities when he is overseas or unwell. Queen Consort Camilla, Prince William, and Princess Beatrice are also on this list.
King Charles, who wants to shrink the monarchy, has received some boost in that area with the presence of Mike Tindall on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Mr. Tindall is married to Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall. Many commentators say his participation in a reality show is not a good look for the Royal Family. They see a commercialization of service that goes against what King Charles is pushing.
Royal expert Katie Nichol said on True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat: “Knowing Princess Anne…The idea that she’ll be sitting, cheering Mike on, is absolutely unthinkable. I think she’ll be thinking, “What on earth is he doing?”. And that’s probably the thoughts of most of the senior Royals.”
She continued: “He’s making a lot of money out of it. I do think this all leads to the much bigger question about Royals and commercialization. We dedicate so much time to discussing Harry and his commercial deals. How is this any different? It’s not. But I think the point is, this really crystallizes Charles’s argument and vision for a slimmed-down monarchy.”
Nichol concluded: “One wonders if the Queen was still alive, and knowing how close Zara was to her grandmother, whether she might have actually had a conversation [about her husband appearing] saying, ‘Granny, just so you know….’ I think that’s much more likely than not. But the idea that they’d have checked with Wills and Kate? No.”
King Charles has to find a way to bring the monarchy back closer to its values while steering it into the future.
