This is probably not the reaction Kim Kardashian was hoping for after she spent a small fortune on a piece of jewelry with deep ties to the British royal family.
This month, the billionaire dropped a cool £163,800 (or $200,000) on a large diamond-lined Attallah Cross pendant that the late Diana, Princess of Wales, wore on multiple occasions.
Kim Kardashian purchased the extravagant creation during the Royal and Noble collection sale at Sotheby’s auction house in London.
During the last five minutes of the auction, Kardashian fought hard to outbid several other buyers interested in the massive cross.
It seems that Kardashian is working to have a link to the royals. The auction house confirmed that Kardashian paid double the price that was predicted for the historical item.
Prince Harry, who has made headlines promoting his tell-all memoir Spare, has not publicly responded to the news of Kardashian owning a piece of his mother’s history.
Prince William and King Charles III have been mum on the matter. However, royal expert Valentine Lowe believes that the Royal Family must have been in stitches upon discovering that Kardashian purchased the pendant for that amount.
The famous author described the priceless reaction to Us Weekly: “I think they probably laugh at it. Laugh about it over the breakfast table and move on.[They] certainly wouldn’t be annoyed, I [don’t] think.”
According to Sotheby’s auction, the diamond and amethyst cross was made by reputable jeweler Garrard in 1920.
During the 1980s, the late businessman Naim Attallah purchased it and loaned it on numerous occasions to his close friend, Princess Diana.
Sotheby’s confirmed that Prince William and Prince Harry’s mother “had a particular fondness” for the pendant and added: “Through Attallah’s friendship with Princess Diana, he loaned it to her several times over a number of years. It is understood that the cross was only ever worn by the Princess, and following her death, it was never seen in public again until now.”
Sotheby’s also said the following about the iconic piece: “Princess Diana’s confidence grew during the 1980s as she became known for increasingly bold fashion choices, moving away from the more romantic and subdued style she had hitherto favored. The fact that she is known to have worn what is now known as the Attallah Cross several times — mostly to private occasions substantiates this evolution.”
Prince William and Prince Harry inherited multiple pieces of jewelry from their mother. The Prince of Wales proposed to Kate Middleton with a sapphire ring that belonged to his mother.
Prince Harry gifted Meghan Markle a Cartier watch from his mom’s collection.
It is believed that Princess Charlotte and Lilibet Diana will receive a majority of their grandmother’s jewelry and tiaras.
