In a recent interview, Selena Gomez decided to share her truth and caused some controversy while doing so.
The singer/actress said she has zero shame talking about her standards in the media and with men who might be interested in dating her.
The businesswoman made an appearance on SiriusXM radio to promote her latest single, entitled “Single Soon,” and the conversation quickly turned to one line on the song where she talks about being high maintenance.
The lyrics go like this: “I know I’m a little high Maintenance, but I’m worth a try Might not give a reason why.”
The singer explained that she is unapologetic about her standards, and some people confuse that with being high maintenance.
The pop star told the host: “I think I have standards, and I think I live in a world right now where boys confuse standards with high maintenance.”
Selena Gomez went on to reveal that she enjoyed calling herself “high-maintenance,” because deep down inside, that is how she feels.
The former child star confessed: “The line was really fun because I’m not ashamed to say, ‘I actually require X, Y, and Z for you to be with me. So in a way, it was just meant to be for the attitude of the song, and that’s genuinely what I feel.”
Selena Gomez was asked to give her criteria for searching for the right man.
Gomez claimed: “You gotta be cool, man. Not cool in the sense that people think you’re cool. You just gotta be nice and like, please make me laugh and also just be good to my family and people around you.”
The 31-year-old artist said that she would love to find the right person, but for the moment she is happy enjoying the single life.
She is practicing self-love and working on herself, including gaining self-confidence, so when she meets the right man, romance will bloom.
She stated: “I think everybody goes through the phase of, ‘Oh, it’d be nice to like have someone. But you know, I’m just enjoying where I’m at and I just want to be happy with who I am so that whenever that person comes into my life, I can just have them add on to me instead of being this insecure, you know, person that I normally used to be.”
Gomez has had some high-profile romances in the past, including with Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Zayn Malik, and Nick Jonas.
The interview went viral, with many applauding Gomez for being clear about what she wants. Others called her out for being a 30-something and still talking about dating “boys.”
