Prince Harry broke all kinds of records with his revelations, and Pinkett Smith is about to do the same. Will Smith‘s wife did two interviews with PEOPLE and TODAY where she went over some of the shocking secrets she revealed in the book.
The actress surprised the world by announcing that she and her husband, Will Smith, have been separated since 2016. Host Hoda Kotb asked: “It was not a divorce on paper, but it was a divorce?”
Pinkett Smith confirmed that they “live separately,” and added: “I think just not being ready yet. Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership, right, and in regards to how do we present that to people, you know? And we hadn’t figured that out.”
The Red Table Talk host held on to the details while explaining that there were “a lot of things” that led to the split from the Oscar-winning actor.
She stated: “I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
Pinkett Smith said she has no plans to file for a divorce. She shared: “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
Pinkett Smith sat down with PEOPLE where she revealed what might have pushed The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to slap Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Pinkett Smith revealed that Rock appeared to know that she and Smith were living separate lives, and he asked her on a date.
She shared: “I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce. And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized, and that was that.”
Some observers say that Rock asking Pinkett Smith out might have played a role in the slap. Pinkett Smith’s memoir will come out on October 17.
