Sarah Michelle Gellar is about to become an extremely busy woman. The actress has taken to her official Instagram to confirm the big happy news that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is making its long-awaited return.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on The WB in 1997, and its finale episode aired on UPN in 2003. The TV series is an adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name, which starred Kristy Swanson.
The series follows fierce and relentless California teenager Buffy Summers, who, with her sidekicks, is out to take on all forms of evil, including vampires and demons.
In a lengthy and emotional post, Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed that the conversation about the reboot started more than three years ago with producer and executive Gail Berman.
Oscar winner Chloé Zhao will direct the pilot, written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The pilot’s executive producer is Dolly Parton.
It is unclear if other past cast members will reprise their roles in the revival. The series will air on Hulu. Sarah Michelle Gellar began with a quote from Buffy Summers: “So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me. If the apocalypse comes, beep me.”
After hours of brainstorming, crying, and intense debates, they devised a brilliant idea to revive the famous show. She wrote: “She told me she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential Buffy revival. I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail I didn’t see a way for the show to exist again.”
The Cruel Intentions star added: “And our twenty-minute coffee quickly turned into a four-hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we talked about how much this show means to us.”
She concluded by saying: “But it was not something I could do unless I were sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.”
To answer everyone’s boiling question, Sarah Michelle Gellar is reprising her role as the titular heroine, but the storyline will differ.
Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that the “new Buffy would focus on a younger Slayer and that Gellar’s Buffy Summers would not be the central character.”
It has been confirmed that Sarah Michelle Gellar will continue on Dexter Original Sin while working on the Teen Wolf revival, Wolf Pack, and Do Revenge.
