Days before King Charles III and Queen Camilla touched down in the United States to execute a high-stakes diplomatic charm offensive, expertly navigating the political turbulence of the Trump era, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle proved they were either extraordinarily bold or dangerously out of their depth with two massive trips abroad.
The visits to Australia and later to Ukraine were billed by their team as private, but their itineraries screamed “mini royal tour.”
In Australia, Prince Harry delivered speeches that took aim at King Charles for his shortcomings as a parent, visited a local hospital, and met with refugees and victims of heinous crimes.
Meghan Markle also engaged in high-profile appearances, visiting community centers and participating in formal roundtables typically reserved for working royals.
During the trip, Meghan also called out the institution, claiming she was “the most bullied person on earth.”
Prince Harry Reclaims Royal Status With High-Stakes Ukraine Mission
Barely catching his breath back in California, Prince Harry flew to Ukraine, and the nature of the visit was unmistakably royal. He gave a poignant speech, called out Russian President Vladimir Putin, and ignited a war of words with President Donald Trump.
But that was only the beginning of the drama; he made his intentions clear to reporters regarding his status. He revealed: “I am royal, and I will continue to do royal stuff.”
Needless to say, King Charles and Prince William were royally fuming at Harry for once again declaring himself “royal” and attempting to seize what the late Queen Elizabeth II explicitly told them they could not have: a “half-in, half-out” lifestyle.
Prince William Refuses To Negotiate Amid “Half-In, Half-Out” Scandal
In a lengthy piece in PEOPLE magazine, it was confirmed that the Palace is flabbergasted and upset. Ailsa Anderson, Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary, claimed: “It won’t help Harry’s case or promote good relations.”
For Prince William, the betrayal is personal and absolute. A royal staffer revealed to the media outlet: “What Harry and Meghan are doing is a nonnegotiable for William. He wouldn’t countenance any acceptance of it.”
Valentine Low, author of Courtiers, spoke to the magazine, explaining that this is almost anti-royal behavior, and added: “The monarchy is meant to be above politics and commercial imperatives. This is exactly what the late Queen wanted to avoid.”
However, an insider close to the Duke of Sussex claimed: “This idea that he’s going against the wishes of the Queen by being half in, half out is nonsense. None of this is being done in the name of the institution.”
Prince Harry Declares Meghan Markle Innocent In Battle Against The King
Sources close to the couple have now spoken to PEOPLE magazine to clear the duchess’s name. The individual authorized to speak to the publication explained that Harry takes the lead and the full responsibility for their actions toward the royals; he alone owns the “sins” against the Crown, while Meghan remains completely innocent.
A friend stated: “Meghan lets him lead on all royal matters and dictate what needs to happen. But it would never put them at odds—they’re on the same team.”
The source elaborated by saying: “It remains very emotional. Harry and Meghan are both realistic. They’re not approaching it with the expectation of a quick resolution. It’s about taking small, manageable steps and seeing where things land. This remains very important to Harry, with Meghan supportive.”
Despite the backlash, the couple remains unified in their California home. A staffer claimed: “They both try to focus on staying as positive as possible. But people forget they’re human beings, especially Meghan. There’s only so much a person can handle. They are the biggest champions of each other. The more adversity they face, the more they come together.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are entering a new phase in their post-royal careers.
