The Duke of Sussex is currently working overtime to deliver the best Invictus Games next year. While it will not match the grandeur of the World Cup, Harry plans to make this return of the games to the United Kingdom spectacular and memorable for the wounded veterans, their families, and the loyal supporters who will cheer the athletes on.
However, the unexpected hiccups, leaks, and public humiliations have started months before the games even begin.
In a lengthy Daily Mail piece, reporter Richard Eden explained that a government committee has voted on its security parameters.
While Prince Harry will personally receive police protection during the event, Meghan Markle and the Sussex children will not be granted that same privilege if they decide to travel.
Meghan is essentially being told by both the government and the King that she is unwanted and unwelcome in the UK.
The veteran reporter explained: “Next year, the Invictus Games will be held in Birmingham and Harry is due to fly from California next month for a series of events to publicize them.”
Taxpayers Refuse To Fund The Duchess Of Sussex
Those who decided Meghan’s fate seem to have considered that Harry started the games and that his presence is required, but Meghan does not have to be there. Therefore, no British tax money will be allocated to secure her stay.
The reporter shared: “…Civil servants who sit on the committee were reported to be opposed to granting the couple taxpayer-funded protection whenever they are in Britain because it carries too much political risk. Hard-pressed British taxpayers would, the officials wisely advised, not be happy to hand over their money so the Sussexes could come and go as they pleased.”
Prince Harry Faces Public Embarrassment Over Police Protection Status
The decision leaves the Duke of Sussex in a deeply uncomfortable position regarding his family’s travel plans. Richard Eden explained that Prince Harry risks looking bad and putting Markle in a humiliating position if she comes, as she will not be protected by British police.
The royal commentator claimed: “Having made such a song and dance about protection, proud Harry risks losing face if he brings Meghan back to Britain with no change in their security status.”
Public money will indeed be spent, but authorities have clarified that it will be strictly channeled into the games and veterans, not into personal security for Harry’s wife.
Richard Eden went on to share: “The Government has committed as much as £26million in public funds to support the Invictus Games, via the Office for Veterans’ Affairs. The thing I was told this week is that Harry will be given police protection for next month’s visit, but that may be only for the events connected to Invictus.”
Palace Sources Confirm Strict Limits For Upcoming Royal Visits
The strict boundaries regarding the duke’s security have already been tested during his previous short-term visits to his homeland, proving that the Crown is keeping a tight grip on public funds.
A source told the publication: “When Harry came last September, he was granted police protection at certain times, such as when he attended the WellChild Awards. That will be the same this time for his Invictus events.”
Responding to the massive security leak, the camp in California has attempted to downplay the dramatic decision.
A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex claimed: “There is no change in the security situation as far as we are aware. We wouldn’t comment on meetings with the Duke’s family.”
Markle and the children seem unlikely to take the trip.
