The British monarchy is under new pressure as important anniversaries approach, which could bring old family tensions back to the surface.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams warns that the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana‘s death may make it harder for the family to reconcile, especially with commercial streaming companies getting involved.
Commercial Interests And The Netflix Threat
As the Royal Family navigates ongoing public scrutiny surrounding the former Prince Andrew scandal, the spotlight on King Charles‘ attempts to repair relationships with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children remains a pressing concern for palace officials.
In particular, the commercial appetite surrounding one major royal anniversary remains a pressing concern for palace officials. Warning that major media deals could leverage upcoming memorial events, author Richard Fitzwilliams explained: “The Royal Family will bear in mind that the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death is coming up, and Netflix would clearly like first refusal on anything the Sussexes were involved in to commemorate this. There is a lot to play for, and obviously we must hope one of the world’s most public family disputes is gradually resolved. However, it is essential for the future of the monarchy that the King and Prince William agree on a joint approach – both publicly and privately – on how this should be handled.”
Reports suggest streaming companies want to work with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on projects about Princess Diana’s legacy.
An industry insider pointed out that there is huge worldwide interest in a documentary made by the Sussexes, saying: ”
If Harry wants to do this then Netflix will bite his hand off.”
Prince Harry On Honoring His Mother’s Legacy
For Prince Harry, working on projects about Princess Diana is very personal. In the documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, he said he wanted to share his mother’s story with the public.
Prince Harry said: “Behind closed doors, she was a very loving, caring mother and an incredibly funny person. I think she lived a lot of her life, especially in private, through us and I think that childish fun element really came out when she was spending time with us.”
Prince Harry also explained how his mother’s death made him determined to keep her memory alive through media and public projects. He said: “I didn’t want her worried or her legacy to be that William and or Harry were completely utterly devastated by it and that all the hard work and all the love and all the energy that she put into when we were younger would go to waste.”
Royal Resistance And Deepening Divisions
Even though Prince Harry has personal reasons for these projects, the Palace is expected to disapprove of any commercial production strongly.
Senior royals, especially Prince William, reportedly believe that turning commercial projects into tributes to their mother goes too far. These allegations have reportedly upset Prince William, with an insider close to him revealing via Yahoo: “He feels strongly that certain spaces should remain entirely private, especially given their personal significance.”
The growing backlash highlights how deeply fractured the brothers’ relationship has become over commercial partnerships. Explaining the deep-seated anger surrounding the streaming giant, the royal source stated: “As everyone knows he hates Netflix with a passion, just like all the royals do back in England because of The Crown and the way they were portrayed on the show. The show completely trashed their grandfather and essentially accused him of being a cheating dog, and it gave a very nasty portrayal of their father too.”
The insider went on to explain how Prince Harry’s choices have permanently damaged any remaining trust between the siblings, as the insider added: “It sickens William that his own brother would work with them at all, let alone on something related to their beloved mother. [Harry] knows exactly how his brother feels about Netflix, so the fact that he’s going ahead with this is such a slap in the face. It’s like nothing is sacred with him when it comes to the almighty American dollar. … If there was even a sliver of hope for reconciliation after these peace talks, this has just totally blown that.”
Highlighting the risk that uncoordinated family projects could create immense tension and overshadow core royal duties, author Richard Fitzwilliams claimed: “William is likely to be concerned about the effects of future visits. These are likely to overshadow the valuable work the monarchy is doing in the media. It would be best if they happened privately with no one knowing and great progress might then be made, though that does not tend to be the Sussexes’ way.”
Royal experts say that to prevent the media from causing further problems, the monarchy needs strong, united leadership. Fitzwilliams stressed how important the relationship is between the King and his heir, stating: “The most disastrous thing that could happen to the monarchy would be a falling out between King Charles and Prince William, who, together with his family, is its future.”
As the anniversary approaches, King Charles and Prince William must present a truly united front, or risk letting commercial media deals and unresolved family rifts permanently overshadow both the Crown’s future and Princess Diana’s enduring legacy.
The upcoming weeks will be crucial for Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family.
