As the young heir prepares for his landmark first day at Eton College this month, Harry and Meghan have reportedly promised to go out of their way to maintain an absolute media blackout, guaranteeing their kids, Archie and Lilibet, will not be generating competing headlines.
For years, royal commentators and media outlets have accused Harry and Meghan of “hijacking” major royal moments—whether by dropping a new Instagram photo, releasing a statement about their charities, or announcing fresh products for Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, on the heels of palace engagements. But this September, the couple is actively clearing the field.
Royal broadcaster and FOX’s entertainment reporter Neil Sean claims that the Sussexes have explicitly given word to King Charles himself: “The Sussexes have assured the King that they will not hijack or derail major royal events, notably the first day of school term for Prince George at Eton. By that, no pictures or comments from either one on that day in September.”
When approached for a comment regarding the reported peace treaty between the transatlantic branches of the family, an Archewell representative simply stated: “This is not something we would comment on.”
Prince George’s start at the well-known boarding school is more significant than just a photo opportunity. Like his father, Prince William, and his uncle, Prince Harry, George’s move to Eton is an important step as he begins his journey as a future monarch.
Explaining why the palace is working overtime to safeguard the young prince’s big moment from distraction, royal commentator Amanda Matta noted: “Prince George’s start at Eton isn’t just a personal milestone; it’s the beginning of his public-facing path as heir to the throne. The Palace is incredibly protective of that narrative, and any competing headline — especially one involving Harry and Meghan — threatens to distract from the ‘steady, future-focused’ brand the Prince and Princess of Wales have worked so hard to build.”
Matta further emphasized that keeping the focus purely on the 13-year-old royal is paramount for peace within the wider family:
“It would certainly be a shame for his first days at Eton to see him embroiled in a ‘feud’ narrative with his uncle and aunt.”
