The insider added: “Meghan took one look at the reality and knew it wouldn’t work. Too remote, too far from London and, frankly, not nearly grand enough.”
The Grade I-listed lodge, built in 1612, is full of English history. It was first used for falconry before becoming a private home, making it a special part of the Spencer family’s story. Still, insiders say the Duchess holds far higher expectations for their British footprint.
The source stated: “Meghan isn’t moving back to Britain to hide away in an old lodge in Northamptonshire.”
The insider noted: “She wants privacy, history and security—but she also expects serious luxury, substantial space and easy access to London. This wasn’t even close.”
For Prince Harry, declining his uncle’s grand offer carried complex emotional weight. Althorp is the childhood home of his late mother, Princess Diana, and serves as her final resting place on the estate’s quiet island. While feelings, and nostalgia were undeniable for the Duke, at his age, being the father of two young kids and seeing all the his wife had to sacrfice, practical realities ultimately won the day.
The royal insider added: “Harry’s heart loved the idea; Meghan’s head killed it. He saw family and memories. She saw isolation and compromise.”
