Prince Harry may have returned to Britain talking about family, his children, security and a new chapter in the country where he was born, but behind the scenes, another possibility is now emerging that could make his UK comeback far more complicated for King Charles III and Prince William.

The good news, at least for anyone who feared another tell-all memoir, is that Harry is not reportedly writing another book about his family. The potential bad news is that a documentary about his mother, Princess Diana, is now being discussed. And the timing could hardly be more dramatic.

According to reports, Harry is exploring several possible projects ahead of the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2027, with a documentary about her life and legacy among the ideas being considered. A source close to the Duke told The Telegraph: “The Duke has discussed a number of possible projects to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales’s passing.”

But the same source stressed that nothing has been decided. “Nothing has been finalized or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honour her legacy during this important anniversary year.”

That distinction matters enormously because reports of a new Diana project could easily be mistaken for confirmation that Harry is already preparing another major royal exposé. He is not. At this stage, the documentary is only one possibility among several projects being considered.

Still, the possibility alone is enough to raise eyebrows. Harry has reportedly approached friends and relatives connected to his late mother about taking part in a potential film, including her brother, Earl Spencer. And that detail becomes particularly significant because Spencer has just placed Diana and the painful aftermath of her death back at the center of the royal conversation with the publication of Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.

Spencer has also publicly supported Harry and Meghan Markle in their long-running security dispute, telling Reuters that, “From a security aspect, as an uncle who’s seen his sister die in very, very preventable circumstances, I would veer towards protection.” He also compared the media treatment of Harry and Meghan with the treatment Diana faced before her death.

So Harry’s reported documentary discussions are arriving at precisely the moment when his uncle is already reopening some of the most painful chapters in the family’s history.

And that is where the potential problem for King Charles and Prince William becomes so obvious.

Harry would not need to make a new accusation against his father or brother for a Diana documentary to generate enormous attention. Simply revisiting Diana’s life, her marriage, her relationship with the Royal Family, the breakdown of that marriage and the aftermath of her death would inevitably bring Charles and William into the story because they are inseparable from Diana’s history.

There is another important twist. If the project moves forward, it could potentially be produced through Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Productions, which has a multi-year first-look agreement with Netflix covering its film and television projects. That means a Diana documentary would not necessarily be a small personal production quietly released somewhere else; it could potentially become another major Sussex-backed streaming project.

And unlike a memoir, a documentary could bring Diana’s friends, relatives and people who knew her directly into the conversation. That could make it even more powerful.

Harry and William previously worked together on the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, when they jointly remembered their mother ahead of the 20th anniversary of her death. Nearly a decade later, the brothers are in a dramatically different place, meaning any new Diana project involving Harry would inevitably be viewed through the lens of their fractured relationship.

The Duke has already used major media projects to tell his side of his family’s story, most notably the Netflix series Harry & Meghan and his memoir Spare. But a documentary specifically centered on Diana would carry a different emotional weight because she remains the defining figure in so much of Harry’s public story.

It could, of course, simply be a tribute. The source close to Harry has explicitly said that he is considering the most meaningful way to honor his mother’s legacy, and there is currently no confirmation that any future film would contain criticism of King Charles or Prince William.

But the subject itself is powerful enough to reopen old questions. And that is why Harry’s current British chapter suddenly looks much bigger than family bonding.

He is reconnecting with Britain, spending time around his children and their British heritage, continuing his charitable work and navigating the complicated territory of his relationship with King Charles, while at the same time reportedly considering a major project about the woman whose death shaped his life.

For King Charles and Prince William, that could feel like another bomb detonating under their feet — not because Harry has been shown to be planning an attack on either man, but because Diana’s story remains one of the most emotionally charged subjects connected to the Royal Family.

The timing is made even more striking by Earl Spencer’s Swan Song, which has once again pushed Diana’s marriage, death and relationship with the Royal Family into the center of public discussion.

So there is one major piece of good news for the Palace: Harry is not reportedly writing another memoir.

But there is another development that could prove just as consequential. A documentary about Diana is being discussed.

Nothing is confirmed. Nothing has been finalized. But if Harry ultimately decides that a documentary is the most meaningful way to honor his mother on the 30th anniversary of her death, the story of Diana could once again place Harry, King Charles and Prince William on the same stage — whether any of them wants to be there or not.
