There has been no shortage of theories about why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle suddenly brought their children back to Britain, with almost every possible explanation being thrown into the conversation, from Harry’s ongoing battle over security and a possible rapprochement with his family to the idea that the Sussexes wanted their children to finally experience more of their British heritage, but one theory has continued to hang over all the others: that Harry rushed his family back because his father, King Charles III, is much sicker than the public has been told.

Now, however, that theory has been given a remarkable pushback — and the source of the denial makes it even more interesting.

Royal commentator Robert Jobson, writing for the Daily Mail, cited information from a source close to Kate Middleton who pushed back against the idea that the King’s condition has suddenly deteriorated, while acknowledging the reality that Charles remains seriously ill and continues to receive treatment.

The timing is particularly striking because Harry and Meghan’s return has inevitably led to questions about Charles, especially after a Page Six source claimed that Harry wanted to be closer to his ailing father.

The Theory That Took Hold

The speculation was understandable. King Charles was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and has continued his public duties while undergoing treatment. That implies that any sudden decision by his youngest son to uproot his family and spend more time in Britain was bound to attract attention.

For some observers, the explanation seemed obvious: perhaps Harry wanted to be close to his father while he still could.

But Jobson’s source offered a very different picture of the situation.

“Harry and Meghan’s sudden decision to resettle in Britain has led many in the US to believe the King is sicker than anyone has admitted,” Jobson wrote.

“I am told that is not the case.” That sentence immediately changes the temperature around the story.

Charles Is Still Sick — But Still Working

The denial does not pretend that Charles is perfectly healthy, nor does it suggest that the King’s cancer diagnosis is insignificant. Quite the opposite.

Jobson continued: “He was diagnosed with cancer. He is still in treatment. He is still working. True, nobody has spoken of remission.”

Then came the bluntest acknowledgment of all: “He is a sick man. But a brave one. That much is true.”

That distinction is important because it separates two very different ideas that have increasingly become intertwined: Charles is undergoing cancer treatment, but that does not automatically mean his condition has suddenly worsened because Harry and Meghan have returned to Britain.

There is no public evidence establishing that Harry uprooted his family because Charles is facing an immediate health crisis, and the latest comments do not prove what motivated the Sussexes’ decision either.

What they do is challenge one of the loudest theories surrounding it.

Why Is Kate’s Circle Part of the Story?

And this is where the story takes an unexpected turn.

The information was attributed by Jobson to a source close to Kate Middleton, making it particularly notable because the Princess of Wales has often been placed at the center of speculation about the Sussexes and their relationship with the wider Royal Family.

A source connected to Kate is now effectively saying: do not read Harry and Meghan’s return as evidence that Charles is suddenly much worse than anyone knows.

That does not mean the Sussexes did not want to be closer to the King. In fact, Jobson acknowledged the obvious human explanation.

“And people understand why a son would want to be closer to his father now.” That may ultimately be the most complicated part of the entire story.

Harry can have genuine reasons for wanting to spend more time near his father while other factors — security, family relationships, the children’s education and their connection to Britain — are also influencing the decision.

The Real Mystery Remains

The return of Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet has created a cloud of speculation around the Royal Family, but the latest intervention suggests that one particular assumption should be treated carefully.

Charles is still receiving treatment. He is still working. He remains a sick man, as Jobson’s source acknowledged.

But there is a major difference between saying that and claiming that Harry has rushed his family back because the King is secretly much worse than the public has been told.

For now, the real reason behind the Sussexes’ decision remains known only to them and those closest to them.

And perhaps that is why the big UK U-turn has become so fascinating: everyone has an explanation for why Harry and Meghan came back, but the one explanation that seemed almost too obvious — that Charles’ health had suddenly taken a dramatic turn — has now been directly challenged by information attributed to a source close to Kate Middleton.

The question is no longer simply why Harry came home. It is what, exactly, he came home for.
