Kylie Kelce probably thought the hardest part of inviting Kate Middleton onto her podcast would be getting the Princess of Wales to actually say yes, but the situation took a surprisingly royal turn when Kylie realized that she had made a small etiquette mistake while publicly extending the invitation — and suddenly found herself offering an apology that Kate had never publicly asked for.

It started innocently enough. During an episode of her podcast Not Gonna Lie, Kylie was talking about Kate’s recent appearance in Scotland, where the Princess of Wales tried her hand at shinty, a traditional Scottish sport with similarities to field hockey, the sport Kate played growing up. Kylie, who played field hockey herself and now coaches the sport, was clearly impressed by what she saw.

“Princess Kate just reminded everyone that she’s still an absolute boss at field hockey,” Kylie said, while also complimenting Kate’s appearance.

Then came the invitation. “Princess Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, if you ever wanted to come on and chitchat about some field hockey and maybe kids,” Kylie said. “I don’t know. We got a couple things in common.”

She even pointed out that their husbands had already established a connection, noting that Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce had previously spoken with Prince William on their New Heights podcast. Kylie essentially suggested that it was now Kate’s turn to join her show.

“We’d love to have you. No pressure, please,” she added. It was a playful invitation, but then came the unexpected twist.

Kylie later realized that referring to Kate as “Princess Kate” was not the appropriate formal title, and she addressed the mistake publicly, explaining that she had learned the proper etiquette and would handle it differently going forward.

“Now I know that. Now I will proceed accordingly,” Kylie said in her follow-up comments, according to PEOPLE.

And that is where the story becomes so much more entertaining. There is no indication that Kate complained about the original wording or demanded an apology, yet Kylie felt compelled to make sure everyone knew that she had learned the proper way to address the future queen.

For Kylie, it was apparently a lesson in the difference between the name millions of people around the world casually use and the formal title expected in royal circles.

Kate has been widely known as “Kate Middleton” for years, and “Princess Kate” is hardly an unfamiliar phrase in the media, but formally she is Catherine, Princess of Wales. Kylie’s decision to correct herself therefore turned what began as a lighthearted podcast invitation into an unexpected lesson in royal etiquette.

The irony is that Kylie’s original invitation was actually filled with compliments.

She saw a connection between herself and Kate through motherhood and field hockey, while the Kelce family already has a link to the Waleses through Prince William’s appearance on Jason and Travis’s podcast. Kylie was not trying to create a controversy; she was essentially saying that Kate would make a fascinating guest.

Instead, Kylie ended up becoming the one explaining herself. And there is something almost charming about the entire situation because the apology does not appear to have come after some explosive royal confrontation. It came because Kylie realized that when the person being invited is a future queen, even a casual podcast invitation can suddenly enter the world of royal protocol.

Whether Kate ever actually accepts the invitation is another matter entirely. Kylie herself acknowledged that the Princess of Wales has an extraordinarily busy schedule, but the invitation remains on the table.

For now, however, the most memorable part may not be the invitation at all. It is the apology. Kate Middleton never needed to ask for one.

Kylie Kelce gave it anyway — and in doing so, she accidentally turned a friendly podcast invitation into a very public lesson in just how complicated it can be when ordinary celebrity culture collides with the British monarchy.
