As Meghan Markle faces a deeply distressing family crisis involving her estranged father, Thomas Markle, the question now hanging over the Royal Family is whether King Charles will extend a hand of compassion to his daughter-in-law while Prince William makes it clear that, as far as the Sussexes are concerned, he has no intention of getting dragged into another round of family drama.
According to veteran royal commentator Richard Kay of the Daily Mail, the King may be preparing to reach out privately to Prince Harry and Meghan at a moment when the Duchess of Sussex is facing renewed scrutiny and emotional strain following allegations concerning her father, who has denied the accusations against him. The situation has drawn international attention, and Meghan has described the allegations as deeply distressing, particularly because she is a mother herself.
Yet even a gesture intended to offer comfort could become another source of tension for the Royal Family. The royal reporter suggested that Charles must consider not only what compassion demands of him as a father and grandfather, but also the consequences if a private family conversation finds its way into the public domain through a leak or in a new interview.
King Charles Faces a Compassion Test Behind Closed Doors
In the Mail piece Kay explained that friends of the Royal Family repeatedly raised the same uncomfortable question: could the King contact Harry and Meghan for a private conversation without it becoming public?
He wrote: “After speaking to friends of the Royal Family this weekend, one argument I heard over and over again went like this: if family members reach out to the couple, will it remain confidential or will it – like Meghan’s extraordinary revelation that she had been shown a letter containing claims about her father’s alleged offending by Scotland Yard in 2019 – become public knowledge?”
This dilemma puts Charles in a difficult position. If he does nothing, it will be interpreted by critics as coldness and cruelty towards his daughter-in-law during her moment of personal distress.
But nothing is simple with the high-profile family. If the King reaches out, it could expose him to criticism if the contact were later discussed publicly.
Kay also highlighted the other side of that dilemma, writing that royal relatives worry that silence could become “a source of resentment and eventual public complaint,” with the family’s perceived lack of compassion potentially becoming another public controversy.
In other words, the King could find himself criticized whichever path he chooses.
Nevertheless, Kay believes Charles’s personal convictions will matter. As he put it: “As a grandfather and a Christian, Charles, I am sure, will offer compassion and support to Meghan.”
The royal commentator also recalled Charles quickly and wholeheartedly stepping in to walk Meghan down the aisle at Windsor in 2018 after her father withdrew from the wedding, a moment that showed the King’s willingness to step into a deeply personal family situation when support was needed.
Now, with Meghan facing another painful chapter involving her father, Kay believes a private gesture from Charles remains a possibility, although no confirmed announcement has established that such contact has taken place.
Prince William Has His Own Reasons to Stay Away
But whatever Charles decides, Prince William appears to be a very different proposition.
According to Kay, the Prince of Wales has considerably less reason to offer a consoling hand, given the history of his relationship with Harry and the accusations and disclosures that have accumulated since their falling-out.
In his memoir Spare, Harry described William as his “arch nemesis” and recounted an alleged physical confrontation between the brothers, leaving little doubt about the depth of their estrangement.
Kay wrote: “For Prince William, however, the stakes are higher. He, more than anyone, has little reason to offer a consoling hand. In his book, Harry presented his relationship with the brother he called his ‘arch nemesis’ as strained and difficult.”
That is the dividing line at the center of this latest royal dilemma: Charles may feel compelled to respond as a father and Christian, while William has his own family to protect and his responsibilities as heir to the throne to consider.
There is no confirmed indication that William plans to contact Meghan, and it would be premature to suggest that the King has already decided to intervene.
A Private Gesture Could Change the Conversation
The wider question is whether this painful episode might create an opportunity for some form of reconciliation, even if it does not immediately repair the relationships between Harry, William and their father.
Charles can offer compassion without necessarily endorsing every decision Harry and Meghan have made, just as William can maintain his distance without being responsible for resolving every family crisis especially the ones that do not concern him.
For the King, the challenge may be finding a way to show humanity and Christian compassion without letting a private gesture become another public confrontation and get swallowed by headlines. For William, the calculation may be simpler: whatever happens between his father and the Sussexes, he does not have to participate.
And that may be the most revealing difference between the two men.
King Charles may reach out because he believes compassion matters. Prince William, meanwhile, may decide that keeping his distance is the only way to prevent another family crisis from becoming his responsibility.
