Sydney Sweeney is responding to critics after some family photos landed on social media. The 24-year-old Euphoria actress was slammed by liberals because her family sported MAGA-inspired hats during her mother’s surprise 60th birthday celebration.
In a country still bitterly divided over the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and what occurred in Washington on January 6, 2021, the images did not sit well with everyone.
As a proud daughter, the Everything Sucks! actress posted some images of the gathering on her Instagram page with the following caption: “No better way to celebrate my momma than a surprise hoedown🤠.”
However, images posted by her brother showed other guests at the party wearing MAGA-inspired hats. One person even wore a “blue lives matter” shirt.
Some were quick to see the photos as a form of political statement. She is adamant that critics are missing the point.
She wrote on Twitter: “You guys, this is wild. An innocent celebration for my mom’s milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention. Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone ♥️ and Happy Birthday, Mom!”
Her brother did try to avoid the controversy with the caption he used for his post. He captioned: “The hats say ‘Make Sixty Great Again.'”
While some commenters are willing to see things her way, others say it is naive not to see the hats and shirt as political symbols. Moreover, the actress cannot be held responsible for her family’s political views.
The White Lotus actress is grateful for the sacrifices they made for her to reach her goals. She told Hunger: “In terms of personal sacrifices, I pulled my entire family from where we’re from. They had to sacrifice the life that we knew and our beautiful home and come to a very, very expensive place to live. We had to sacrifice our own well-being, and it kinda tore everything apart, so that was difficult.”

In a separate interview, she talked about how she became an actress with their backing. She stated: “My parents thought I was wanting to be a princess, that it wasn’t real. You couldn’t touch it. I was from a smaller town. So, I put together a five-year business plan presentation about what could happen if they let me!”
Some observers say that Sweeney needs a more robust PR team to avoid similar incidents in the future. However, she seems to be the one handling her image.
