Many assumed that Tom Cruise‘s ego took a hit when he was roasted.
During a monologue at the Directors Guild Of America Awards, Judd Apatow went after Cruise, and many assumed that he was not interested in a new round and therefore skipped the Oscars.
Sources have revealed that this could not be further from the truth. The mega film star bailed on the biggest night in Hollywood because he did not want to have an uncomfortable encounter with one of his famous exes.
A source told DailyMail.com: “Tom was not there because she was there, and he did not want a run-in.”
However, another insider claimed Cruise skipped the event because of his busy schedule.
Sources close to Cruise “claimed his absence was ‘not personal’ and was nothing more than scheduling difficulties.”
Cruise’s second wife, actress Nicole Kidman, and her husband, Keith Urban, were at the awards ceremony.
The Australian couple had a loved-up moment on the red carpet where they were seen kissing and playfully caressing each other.
Tom Cruise was supposed to be at the event to celebrate the commercial and critical success of his latest movie, Top Gun: Maverick. The movie received six Academy Award nominations.
Not many people were betting on Cruise or the movie winning trophies, but fans believed he should have been present to celebrate his significant achievement.
One of those people who was hoping to see the famous Scientologist at the soirée is David Letterman.
Mr. Letterman appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and did not hesitate to ask Jimmy Kimmel — the man who hosted the 2023 Oscars — the burning question on everyone’s mind.
The retired TV legend asked: “Here’s something that’s a little sensitive: Tom Cruise. Where was Tom Cruise?”
Kimmel answered: “We don’t know where Tom Cruise was. We heard production issues.”
Letterman, who wanted more information about Cruise’s absence, continued: “What does that mean? That’s nonsense. Tom Cruise should’ve been there celebrating his big jetpack Maverick show.”
Kimmel claimed he had no clue and added: “Exactly. It’s very non-specific. But we have no idea what happened. It seems like he should’ve been there, but he was not there, and, like you were saying before, maybe he didn’t feel like he was gonna win, so he didn’t want to come.”
Letterman then confessed to Kimmel: “But between you and me, he should have been there, right?”
Kimmel answered: “Yeah, of course. He’s the prince of Hollywood.”
It is believed that Tom Cruise was in Italy shooting the Mission: Impossible sequel.
Cruise also traveled to London to attend Michael Caine‘s 90th birthday party.
