Florence Pugh Talks About Her Appearance And Her Decision To Make Ugly Faces Acceptable

Florence Pugh New Hair Face

British actress Florence Pugh has always danced to her own beat since bursting onto the Hollywood scene. Most recently, she decided to shave her head.

The Oscar-nominated actress unveiled the bold and liberated look at the 2023 Met Gala in May. Florence Pugh, who is currently promoting her critically-acclaimed movie Oppenheimer, did an interview with Radio Times to talk about the project.

However, rapidly, the conversation turned to the way that Pugh has decided to break the mold on the screen and the red carpet.

The Don’t Worry Darling actress said that she opted to go for the buzz cut because she wanted to remove the vanity.

Florence Pugh said it was a powerful decision to shave off her hair to shake the image that women in Hollywood need to be glamorous at all times.

The 27-year-old actress also explained she is not eager to wear a full face of makeup because she wants the characters she plays to shine through.

The Oscar-nominating actress said: “I purposely chose to look like that. I wanted vanity out of the picture. Hollywood is very glamorous — especially for women — and it’s hard for an audience to see past that. Whenever I’ve not needed to be glam or have a full face of makeup, I fight to keep it that way.”

She confessed: “It helps the audience. Vanity is gone. The only thing that people can look at then is your raw face. Even at the beginning of my career, I was always fighting to control my image.”

She added that being make-up-free allows her to make ugly faces more acceptable on the screen.

She claimed: “It helps me when I’m wearing less makeup because then I’m less of a sparkly thing on screen. I feel like I’m allowed to do ugly faces like it’s more acceptable.”

Florence Pugh revealed why she accepted a role in the extraordinary movie Oppenheimer. The biographical thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan focuses on the extraordinary life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a theoretical physicist, who was instrumental in developing the first nuclear weapons in the 1940s.

Florence Pugh said she made these unconventional decisions with her appearance because she wants to fully control her image.

She shared: “It’s one of the biggest movies I’ve made.’Chris’s approach is similar to indie movie-making. It reminded me of the early days when I was used to a fast-paced way of working – where, if you lost a scene from the day, you would lose it from the movie.”

She added: “When I walked on set, I couldn’t believe there was that similar, incredible adrenaline, which I hadn’t felt on a massive movie for a long time. It’s a wonderful thing to inject into a film set – believing in yourself and what you’re making.”

Fans have Pugh’s back.
