Matthew McConaughey’s mom, Mary McCabe, cooked up a twisted plan to find out if her future daughter-in-law, Camila Alves, was a fighter.
Camila Alves revealed that Mary McCabe went to the extremes. Luckily for the grandmother, the story has a happy ending.
In a new interview, on Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam podcast, Camila Alves shared that the first few months of dating the Hollywood star were hell because of his overprotective mother.
While unaware of it, McCabe decided to put the Brazilian model through a brutal test to make sure she was wife material. McCabe decided to push all of Alves’s buttons with a series of unkind actions.
The businesswoman claimed: “She did all these things when I first came into the picture, right? She was really testing me. I mean, really testing me.”
The mother of three confesses that she called her by all of Matthew McConaughey’s ex-girlfriends’ names. In the past Mathew dated Ashley Judd, Cassandra Hepburn, and Penélope Cruz.
She also spoke to her in broken Spanish, which is rather odd because Camila Alves is Brazilian, and therefore her mother tongue is Portuguese.
Camila Alves explained: “She would call me by all of Matthew’s ex-girlfriends’ names, she would start speaking Spanish with me in a very broken way, kind of putting [me] down a bit. I mean, all kinds of stuff.”
For many months, Alves took bitter and nasty remarks and remained diplomatic when she was called by another woman’s name.
However, during a business trip to Turkey, things escalated and she could no longer be Mrs. Nice Lady so she unleashed the Latina inside of her and gave McCabe a piece of her mind.
She shared: “The whole way there, the whole plane ride to Istanbul, she was telling me all these stories and putting all these things in my head. On the third day, I realized she was full of s—t.”
Alves was shocked to discover that McCabe was waiting for that kind of fiery reaction all along. McCabe wanted someone who could defend herself and fight for her son.
She confessed: “So I just flipped it on her and brought my spicy Brazilian, Latin side, and I let her have it. So I went back to her, and we had it back and forth, back and forth. And then at the end, she just looked at me and she was like, ‘OK. Now you’re in.”
Since then the two women have had a lovely relationship. Every once in a while they butt heads but it always ends in laughter.
Alves and McConaughey began their romance in 2006 and got married in 2012. The couple shares three children. What are your thoughts on having loved ones go through tests similar to this one?
