The photos of the royal couple doing what was deemed a white-savior-colonial reenactment went viral, and they were destroyed by internet users.
This week, it was confirmed that Prince William and Kate Middleton would travel to Wales to take part in royal engagements as part of Black History Month.
Omid Scobie wrote on his official Twitter account: “Prince William and Princess Kate will mark the start of Britain’s #BlackHistoryMonth with a visit to Wales, where they will carry out two engagements focusing on how young people of color are creating positive change in the country.”
The announcement went viral, with many commentators pointing out that Prince William and Kate Middleton have never reached out to their sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, who has spoken about the racist abuse she suffered while in the UK.
The pair were called hypocrites and were reminded that charity begins at home with their biracial sister-in-law, niece, and nephew.
After the contentious Caribbean visit, Prince William and his spouse had an urgent meeting with their entire senior staff to analyze why the trip failed and searched for ideas to better handle race-related matters.
A source told the Mirror at the time: “The Duke was frustrated at the lack of answers and the absence of any workable solutions being put forward. The feeling was there were so many pitfalls that could have been avoided. He knows full well that it is his reputation on the line.”
The person added: “In dealing with sensitive issues, such as the ones they met on the tour, if they aren’t in tune with what is going on in the world they will be left fighting for their futures.”
Maybe Prince William and Kate Middleton have learned all they need to know about racism, slavery, and the marginalization of Black people and now know how to avoid protests, awkward pictures, and uncomfortable meetings.
There is a possibility that they went through sensitivity training, are better prepared, and will masterfully handle next month’s surprising events.
