In her own words, Leah Remini revealed that she and Katie Holmes were close friends.
However, it appears that in 2012 when she divorced Tom Cruise and cut all ties with the Church of Scientology — the relationship between Holmes and Leah Remini came to an abrupt end.
When the King of Queens star was asked about Katie Holmes, she stated that they were indeed close and what happened was “sick.”
Remini said: “We used to be close friends. It’s quite sick.” On the question of what happened between the two actresses and former Scientologists, one expert weighed in and explained that it might be linked to Tom Cruise and the controversial religion.
According to journalist Tony Ortega, the agreement that Holmes signed with Cruise after their divorce most likely forbids her from having any contact with anyone who is attacking the Scientology belief system.
To have full custody of her daughter, Suri Cruise, Holmes probably accepted many tough terms, including not having any communication with Leah Remini, who is the top whistleblower of the Church of Scientology.
Leah Remini has become an investigative reporter who has been highly critical of the organization via series, documentaries, and podcasts.
Remini has also filed a lawsuit against Scientology and David Miscavige because: “They have subjected me to what I believe to be psychological torture.”
Ortega, a reporter best known for his coverage of the Church of Scientology, said that Holmes probably signed “some nondisclosure agreement saying she wouldn’t say anything bad about Scientology to ensure she had primary custody of their daughter. She wanted to get away, and she wanted to get Suri.”
Ortega went on to say that many former members of the Church of Scientology were hoping that Katie Holmes would share her truth and experience while at the church, but she has made the choice or sacrifice to remain silent for the sake of her only child.
He stated: “We were all hoping that eventually, Katie would say more and that we’d see them together, but Leah has gone on to become this real lightning rod for exposing Scientology’s abuses, and I think Katie just wants to keep the life she has right now with Suri and not get into a big fight with the church.”
Ortega noted that Holmes has not spoken about Tom Cruise or the church since the divorce because she is mostly not allowed to do so.
Ortega told Us Magazine: “I’m sure her father, who’s a smart attorney, has probably told her that hanging out with Leah would be considered disparaging the church in the eyes of Tom and the church.”
It is not clear if the two women will reconnect in the future.
