Matt Damon has unwillingly found himself in a difficult position, torn between his loyalty to his best friend, Ben Affleck, and his desire to protect Jennifer Lopez from further pain and public humiliation.
Damon was pictured having a bonding experience with Lopez at the premiere of their new movie in Canada.
During her first major public appearance after filing for divorce from Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez held Matt Damon’s hands tightly backstage at the Toronto event.
It was believed that the actors were saying a prayer for their families during this complicated time. However, sources told The Daily Mail it was not a religious moment.
Lopez wanted to pour her heart out to Damon about her brutal and embarrassing divorce from Affleck. The mother of two was hoping to find an ally in Matt Damon.
However, Damon decided to shut her down and defend his best friend of over four decades. The Mail explained: “Matt Damon shut down any attempt that JLo made to discuss Ben at the premiere,’ an insider told DailyMail.com exclusively. Her timing was awkward because she would have known that pulling Matt aside at the event to have an intimate talk would be picked up and go viral.”
The source continued: “Her whole hand on his hand was a nice touch – but he was not having any of it. He told her he is glad she is doing well and is thankful for her participation in the film – but he made it clear he was not there to talk about Ben at all.”
It has now been revealed that Matt Damon is no longer protecting his best pal. He holds many of Affleck’s dark secrets and is no longer hiding them for Lopez.
Damon has a lot of love for Affleck but knows that sometimes he can be cruel. The actor also feels that Lopez has been treated unfairly by Affleck, who initiated the reconciliation and marriage.
An insider told In Touch: “J. Lo has been confiding a lot in Matt, not just in Toronto but also in recent weeks. She’s found him to be a calming influence and is hopeful their friendship will last beyond the marriage, plus she’d like to work with him down the line, too.”
The source added that Damon is no longer pretending Affleck’s behavior is acceptable. The insider claimed:”It’s been challenging for Matt to sit by and condone or even forgive Ben’s behavior, which he finds cruel and totally unwarranted.”
Matt Damon’s wife, Luciana Barroso, firmly believes that Ben Affleck displayed a total lack of empathy and class in how he dumped and hurt Jennifer Lopez.
The person said: “He’s not trying to butt in for the sake of it and can see very well that life with J. Lo was likely a challenge, but not to a point where she deserved to be humiliated and degraded. Matt’s big on manners. His wife, Luciana [Barroso], also agrees that Ben’s handled this situation with a serious lack of empathy or class. And they’ve not been shy letting him know that.”
