When King Charles III was the heir to the throne, he worked diligently for several decades to prepare for his future role.
During those years, His Majesty revolutionized the Duchy of Cornwall, transforming it into a self-sustaining and lucrative enterprise that now generates millions in annual income for the British royals.
The then-Prince Charles championed causes such as climate change and sustainable living, all while providing a substantial income for the Royal Family.
In contrast to King Charles’s enterprising approach, Prince William, as the new heir, has decided to forge a different path. Rather than focusing on creating and innovating, he is more determined to preserve and adapt the monarchy. Prince William’s vision centers on conservation and modernization—maintaining some core traditions while reducing waste and refining royal duties with what he calls a small “r”.
By reducing his official engagements and focusing on a select few causes, he aims to ensure the monarchy operates efficiently and remains relevant to modern society. This approach reflects his intention to lead a monarchy that is both effective and meaningful for the new era.
As this new direction takes shape, opinions are divided. While many royalists are concerned that Prince William’s path will seriously damage or even spell the end of the monarchy, some believe that his way of doing business might actually save the centuries-old institution. Examining recent criticisms, some experts point to the following challenges: In an era where the Royal Family is often bombarded with protests during their appearances and petitions online demanding the abolition of the monarchy because it benefited from slavery, the institution is facing a real and brutal reckoning. Many countries, such as Barbados, Jamaica, Belize, and the Bahamas, are distancing themselves from the realm, and a large group called “Republicans” criticize the royals for their lifestyle, spending habits, and the large incomes they receive from taxpayers.
Against this backdrop of uncertainty, some reporters suggest that Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, have found the solution to ensure the monarchy’s continuation. Specifically, the couple has a philosophy in place: by spending less, streamlining official engagements, and having fewer working royals on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, they aim to safeguard the institution’s future. If successful, this approach could ensure that when Prince George becomes King, he will inherit a modern and relevant monarchy, much like his predecessors.
Ingrid Seward, royal biographer and Editor-in-Chief of Majesty Magazine, explained: “William was never going to move into Buckingham Palace. He has never had any fondness for it, and he probably hasn’t spent much time there. The Queen and Prince Philip were devastated when they had to move out of Clarence House; Winston Churchill told them that the Queen had to live in a palace. But that was then, and this is now. Maybe Buckingham Palace will open to the public all year round, rather than only in the summer, and they will use Windsor Castle for banquets.”
She added: “I think William will be a hands-on father as well as a Monarch, which is quite difficult, but I think he will manage it by changing the way that things are run, including being more self-sufficient and not being reliant on the taxpayer. He is quite visionary, and can see that the monarchy has to change in order to survive.”
Prince William has sparked a fierce debate over whether his protective strategy will harm or benefit the monarchy. Only time will tell if his vision trumps his father’s.
