Military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang has reached an alarming new threshold as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Vladimir Putin has received a fresh batch of ballistic missiles from North Korea.
In a recent address, Zelenskyy said the Kremlin is rapidly adding foreign weapons and getting ready to host more North Korean troops in Russia.
The influx of heavy munitions comes as Ukrainian forces continue striking deep into Russian territory, depriving Moscow of an isolated war zone and forcing the Kremlin to lean on foreign regimes to sustain its military operations.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy Warns North Korean Weapons Field-Testing Threats Extend Beyond Europe
Speaking to the international community about the growing arms transfers between Pyongyang and Moscow, Zelenskyy said Kim Jong Un is using the war in Ukraine to test and improve North Korea’s weapons.
He noted that the alliance threatens stability in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The Ukrainian president said: “It has also received additional ballistic missiles from North Korea. Everyone around the world must understand what this means.”
Explaining that practical combat experience allows North Korean engineers to correct critical design flaws in their missile systems, Zelenskyy warned: “North Korea’s ballistic missiles and other weapons are being improved through its collaboration with Russia. The more North Korean strikes there are here in Ukraine, in Europe, the more their missiles and soldiers are used, the more they correct their shortcomings and blind spots, the greater the danger will later be for Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, and other countries in the region.”
Vladimir Putin Prepares To Deploy Massive New Contingent Of North Korean Troops
Along with the missile transfers, Ukrainian defense intelligence reports that Vladimir Putin is preparing to add tens of thousands more North Korean soldiers to Russian military units.
This large troop deployment shows that the Kremlin is facing serious manpower shortages and is relying more on outside help. Calling for action, Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged world leaders to break up the military alliance between Moscow and Pyongyang.
He said: “This is the first time in Russia’s history that they no longer have a secure strategic rear. For the first time, they cannot wage war without reinforcements from North Korea.”
Calling on international partners to strengthen air defense assistance to shield Ukrainian cities and sever Pyongyang’s incentives for participating in the war, Zelenskyy added: “We are also, in fact, speaking about taking away North Korea’s appetite and any interest in coming here – to our land and into our skies – with its weapons in order to learn how to wage war.”
South Korea Issues Cautious Response To Volodymyr Zelenskyy Requests For Air Defense
Although Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urgently requested military aid and air defense systems, South Korea still refuses to send weapons to Ukraine.
Ukrainian leaders have tried to get advanced air defense systems from Seoul to stop North Korean missile attacks, saying both countries share security concerns.
Speaking about the legal limits on South Korea’s defense exports, a senior official from the South Korean Foreign Ministry said: “South Korea has always supplied defense materials to any country in accordance with its domestic law.”
The South Korean Foreign Ministry official confirmed that South Korea will only provide humanitarian, civil, and economic aid, not direct military support. The official said: “The government has offered support to Ukraine in a variety of sectors, including energy, infrastructure, healthcare, and education, and will continue reviewing measures to help Ukraine recover peace and rebuild.”
Seoul Condemns Moscow-Pyongyang Alliance While Maintaining Arms Export Restrictions
Although South Korea will not send military equipment, officials there admit that closer ties between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un are a serious threat to security in East Asia.
Seoul also said North Korean troops and missiles to Russia break several United Nations Security Council resolutions. The senior South Korean Foreign Ministry official called for an immediate end to military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang, saying: “Our government’s position is that this cooperation should stop immediately. We are following the matter closely.”
Acknowledging the legal hurdles while remaining hopeful for future diplomatic breakthroughs regarding air defense coordination, Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded: “They have a legal restriction under their Constitution. But we would like to have this cooperation and are counting on it. Our diplomats are in contact.”
Russia is building a response as Ukraine goes on the offense.
