For years, Kate Middleton has been repeatedly placed into one particular role whenever the Royal Family’s painful feud between Prince William and Prince Harry returns to the headlines: the peacemaker who might eventually step in, soften the tension and somehow help bring the two brothers back together, but now Omid Scobie has delivered a remarkably direct challenge to that entire narrative, suggesting that the Princess of Wales may have far less involvement in the brothers’ relationship than many people have assumed.
Scobie, the journalist once described as a Sussex “cheerleader” because of his close coverage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, addressed the issue in the Disney+ documentary Harry & Meghan: The Return of the Prince, where he was asked about the possibility of Kate becoming the person who could help heal the rift.
His answer was striking. “There’s always this talk of Kate potentially being the peacekeeper, the one that could bring the two brothers together,” Scobie said.
But then he delivered the line that changes the entire conversation. “If I’ve learned anything over the years from covering them, it’s that Kate has very little to do with that relationship between the brothers.”
That is Scobie’s assessment, rather than a statement from Kate or Prince William, but it directly challenges one of the most persistent narratives surrounding the royal feud.
The Peacemaker Story Takes a Stunning Hit
Kate has often been portrayed as the royal family member who could potentially reach Harry, particularly because she once had a close relationship with him and because she has long been viewed as someone who could help keep family relationships steady behind palace walls.
But Scobie is essentially arguing that the relationship between William and Harry belongs to William and Harry, and that Kate is not the person controlling what happens between them.
That distinction matters because it changes the question entirely.
Instead of asking when Kate might take on her old mantle of family negotiator and finally step in and repair the estranged brothers’ relationship, the more revealing question becomes whether she ever considered that relationship hers to repair in the first place.
And there is another part of Scobie’s comments that makes the situation even more dramatic.
William Is His Own Man
Scobie said the situation with King Charles appears to have moved in a different direction.
“I think we’ve seen with Charles things have moved forward and that iciness has thawed out. There’s a warmth there,” he said.
But when the subject turned to William, Scobie offered a much more definitive assessment. “With William, I don’t see it will ever change.”
Again, that is Scobie’s view and should not be mistaken for a statement from William, but it reinforces the idea that William makes his own decisions about his relationship with Harry.
And if that is the case, then Kate does not need to be the person standing between two brothers trying to force a reconciliation.
She can be William’s wife, the mother of their children and a senior member of the Royal Family without becoming responsible for solving a relationship that belongs to two grown men.
Kate May Have More Important Things to Worry About
And perhaps this is the part that makes the entire discussion so captivating.
While commentators continue debating whether Kate could somehow play a role in the Harry and William drama, the picture coming from the latest reporting suggests that she and William are far more focused on the life and responsibilities directly in front of them.
Erin Hill, a senior editor at PEOPLE magazine, said: “Palace insiders have told People that William and Kate behind the scenes have decided to take a very old-school royal approach to this.”
Hill described that approach as “keep calm, carry on, do the job,” adding that Harry and Meghan are “not a priority for them” and that William and Kate are “very much looking to the future.”
That paints a very different picture from the idea that Kate is sitting around waiting for the right opportunity to fix the family.
Her attention appears to be directed toward matters much closer to home, including her responsibilities, her family and the future role she and William are preparing for, while the Harry and Meghan drama continues to generate endless speculation around them.
In other words, while the world may still be fascinated by what happened between the brothers, Kate may simply have more important things demanding her attention.
The family dispute can continue making headlines, commentators can continue analyzing every interaction and Harry and Meghan can continue attracting enormous attention, but none of that necessarily means Kate has to make their relationship her priority.
The Old Story May Have Been Wrong
For years, the public has been offered a comforting image of Kate as the woman who could eventually bring William and Harry back together, but Scobie’s comments challenge that idea at its foundation.
Perhaps Kate was never supposed to be the family mediator. Perhaps William never expected his wife to solve his relationship with his brother.
And perhaps the biggest mistake has been assuming that because Kate is compassionate and diplomatic, she must therefore have the power to change William’s position.
Scobie has now put another possibility on the table: Kate can support her husband without being responsible for his relationship with Harry. The future queen can remain part of the family without becoming the person expected to repair every fracture inside it, and she can look toward the future without constantly being pulled back into the past.
That may ultimately be the biggest hit to the old Kate Middleton narrative. The woman who was repeatedly imagined as the royal family’s great peacekeeper may simply be a woman getting on with her own life, her own family and her own responsibilities and more importatnly her mental and physical health.
And while everyone else is still looking backward at the family conflict, Kate and William may already be looking forward.
