Prince Harry may have returned to Britain hoping that proximity to his family could eventually open the door to a new chapter, but behind the palace walls, a very different battle is reportedly taking shape, with Prince William allegedly pushing King Charles to take a tougher position on Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal status and refusing to let their return quietly turn into the comeback they may have hoped for.
According to royal sources cited by Closer and reported by AOL, William is reportedly urging his father to consider removing Harry and Meghan’s royal titles and honours, with one source claiming that the future King is prepared to make the issue a long-running fight. The source went even further, claiming William is “determined to win” and would continue pressing Charles if necessary.
The alleged strategy is particularly striking because it is not being described as a public confrontation between the brothers.
Instead, it is happening behind the scenes. One source claimed William believes Harry and Meghan have continued to benefit from their association with the monarchy while operating independently of the institution, particularly after publicly discussing their experiences inside the Royal Family through interviews, documentaries and Harry’s memoir.
“Meghan and Harry [are] doing everything on their own terms and not running a thing by the palace,” the source alleged.
That accusation goes directly to the heart of the problem surrounding Harry and Meghan’s return.
The couple are now back in Britain with their children, have established a new British home base and have spoken about the importance of their children having a connection to the country, but they remain non-working royals. In September, Buckingham Palace issued a letter clarifying that Harry and Meghan remain private citizens and do not represent the Royal Family. People also reported that King Charles and William were “completely united” on the question of the Sussexes representing the monarchy.
And that distinction could become increasingly important. Harry can return. He can live in Britain. He can spend time with his father.
But that does not automatically mean a return to royal duties, royal representation or the institutional position he once occupied.
That appears to be where William’s alleged behind-the-scenes pressure becomes significant.
The source cited by Closer reportedly pointed to William’s position on Prince Andrew as evidence of his determination, claiming that the Prince of Wales spent years urging Charles to take tougher action before eventually getting his way on Andrew’s remaining royal status.
“He’s taking the same attitude here,” the source claimed. “He plans to work on his father every day if needed.”
Those claims have not been independently confirmed by Buckingham Palace, and there is an important distinction between what royal sources allege William wants and what the King ultimately decides.
Still, the timing makes the story impossible to ignore.
Harry’s return has already produced one major clarification from the Palace, while William and Kate Middleton have reportedly chosen to avoid a “knee-jerk reaction” to the Sussexes’ move and instead remain focused on their family and royal duties.
That may actually be the most revealing part of the story.
Harry’s comeback, if that is what he ultimately wants, cannot simply be created by moving back across the Atlantic.
It would require acceptance from an institution he no longer represents, and perhaps more importantly, acceptance from a brother who, according to royal author Russell Myers, currently has no intention of having a working or private relationship with the Sussexes.
So while Harry and Meghan may be rebuilding a life in Britain, William is reportedly thinking much further ahead.
And if these claims are accurate, the future King is not preparing to welcome Harry back into the old royal system.
He is preparing to make sure the rules are firmly established before Harry gets anywhere near it.
