Meghan Markle is said to have reluctantly returned to the UK because she believed in Prince Harry’s dream and wanted to support him. The Duke of Sussex sold it to her as a way to rebuild bridges and start a new chapter for their family. But according to her talkative neighbors, instead, the Duchess has found herself facing a painfully familiar word that traumatized her: silenced.
New comments from people living near the Sussexes’ reported Cotswolds home have brought back memories of Meghan’s explosive 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, when she was asked whether she had been “silent” or “silenced” during her time inside the Royal Family.
Meghan’s answer was only two words. “The latter.”
Now, years later, the situation has taken an uncomfortable turn. Some locals have openly criticized the couple, with one resident delivering a particularly blunt message.
“The classier thing would be to keep their mouths shut,” Charlotte Watts told the Express.
That comment is striking because Meghan once described feeling as though she had been prevented from speaking openly while she was a working member of the Royal Family. Her Oprah interview became one of the defining moments of the Sussexes’ post-royal life, as Meghan spoke publicly about her experiences behind palace walls and Harry discussed the effect the royal family conflict had on him.
The current criticism is obviously not the same situation, but the language creates an extraordinary full-circle moment: Meghan once said she felt silenced, while now a neighbor is publicly telling her and Harry to keep their mouths shut.
And that is exactly why the comments have attracted so much attention.
The Sussexes have reportedly returned to Britain with Archie and Lilibet hoping to establish a stronger presence in the country, but their homecoming has not been entirely smooth. Local reactions have been mixed, and some residents have questioned the couple’s decision to return after years of publicly discussing their experiences with the Royal Family.
One resident, Elaine Hunt, criticized Harry for discussing family matters in his memoir and interviews, saying, “He shouldn’t have exposed everything he did in his book and the interviews.”
Another local, Terry Hunt, said the Sussexes had “come back trying to build bridges” but added that “it hasn’t gone well so far.”
There was also criticism over the couple’s security battle. Keith Matthews said he did not believe Harry and Meghan should regain their previous security arrangements, adding that “they should have stayed in America.”
Yet perhaps the most revealing criticism came from Watts, who argued that other celebrities living in the area manage to maintain their privacy.
“There are so many celebrities living around here,” she said. “People who actually do things and are more well-known than Meghan and Harry. But they keep a low profile and don’t draw attention to themselves.”
Then came the line that has become impossible to ignore. “The classier thing would be to keep their mouths shut.”
It is important to stress that these are comments from individual residents, not a verdict from everyone in the Cotswolds, and there is no evidence that the remarks have caused Meghan to experience the same emotional crisis she described in 2021.
But symbolically, the comparison is powerful. Meghan once went before Oprah to explain what she believed happened when she tried to speak inside the Royal Family.
Now, after returning to Britain, she is once again surrounded by a debate about whether she and Harry should speak, explain, defend themselves or simply remain quiet.
And perhaps that is the strangest part of this entire homecoming. The woman who once told Oprah she had been “silenced” has returned to Britain only to hear a very different version of the same message from some of the people living around her.
Keep your mouth shut.
