There is something far more revealing than an angry outburst coming from Prince William and Kate Middleton when it comes to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and it may be the fact that they simply do not appear interested in doing this all over again.
According to The Times, members of the royal family have largely responded to the Sussexes’ return to Britain with a mixture of weariness and caution, rather than excitement. One family member reportedly walked into a conversation during the summer, learned that Harry and Meghan were returning to the UK and responded with a blunt reaction: “Oh no, not that again.”
That one sentence perhaps says more about the atmosphere surrounding the Sussexes than any carefully crafted palace statement ever could.
William And Kate Have Seen This Movie Before
For Prince William, the timing could hardly be more complicated. His brother has returned to Britain after years away, while Earl Spencer’s memoir has reopened painful questions surrounding Princess Diana and created another difficult situation for King Charles.
And through all of this, William and Kate have apparently chosen not to make themselves part of the noise.
That is particularly striking because the Spencer controversy touches directly on William’s family history, while Harry’s return places the brothers in the same country again for the first time in years. Yet instead of rushing forward with public comments, William and Kate have continued with their royal duties and allowed the controversy to burn around them.
That approach has already been praised by former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, who said William and Catherine were right to ignore the noise and simply continue working. She argued that they had avoided being “sucked into the drama,” much as they did during previous controversies involving Harry.
And perhaps that is the real story.
This Is Not William Fuming — It Is Something Colder
One of the most interesting details from The Times report is that people close to William have pushed back against the idea that he is supposedly “livid” about Harry’s return.
Apparently, that is not quite right. The anger that may once have been there has faded with time, leaving something much more complicated behind. The Times describes it as more of a “gentle smoulder” than outright fury, while others have suggested William simply feels numb to the entire situation.
That distinction matters because anger can eventually burn itself out, while emotional exhaustion can create something far more permanent: indifference.
William may not need to shout, confront Harry or publicly condemn Meghan. He may simply have reached a point where he does not want to spend any more of his life responding to the same family drama.
Kate’s Family Has Had Enough To Worry About
There is also an emotional layer involving Kate and her family that should not be overlooked.
The Times report describes sympathy surrounding William, particularly after Kate’s illness, with one source saying: “Kate’s poor mother must be worried sick.”
That paints a picture of a family already carrying its own concerns while another wave of royal drama arrives at the door.
For William and Kate, the Sussexes’ return is therefore not happening in some empty space. It is arriving alongside family tensions, Earl Spencer’s public battle with King Charles and the enormous pressure surrounding their own roles.
Perhaps that explains why their response has been so controlled.
The Silence May Be The Chilling Part
And this is where the story becomes bigger than whether William is angry with Harry. William and Kate appear to have learned something: silence can be more powerful than confrontation.
They do not have to tell the world what they think of Harry and Meghan every time something happens. They do not have to answer every allegation, respond to every interview or become participants in another public family feud.
They can simply keep moving. That is exactly what makes their apparent indifference so striking. Harry and Meghan have returned to Britain, the Spencer controversy has reopened old wounds and the royal family once again finds itself surrounded by questions about family relationships.
Yet William and Kate are not rushing toward the cameras. They are carrying on.
And perhaps the chilling message is that after everything that has happened, Prince William and Kate Middleton may no longer believe they need to explain themselves to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — or to anyone else.
