Prince Harry may have just handed Meghan Markle the job she never expected to want — and one that could leave her facing an entirely different kind of royal backlash.
According to a new Yahoo report, Harry is allegedly developing a film marking the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, and Meghan is not expected to simply stand somewhere in the background. A production insider claimed she could become the “voice” of Diana’s story, making her a central figure in a project about Harry’s mother. Neither the Sussexes nor Netflix has confirmed the reported project or Meghan’s role.
And that is precisely where the trouble begins.
Because if Meghan really does become the voice viewers hear throughout a documentary about Diana, she will inevitably become part of the story herself, whether she intends to or not. Instead of Harry alone remembering his mother, the audience could be watching Meghan interpret Diana, speak about Diana and potentially draw attention back toward the Sussexes at the exact moment the Royal Family is preparing to mark one of the most emotionally significant anniversaries in its modern history.
The insider put it bluntly: “Meghan isn’t getting a cameo – she’s becoming the voice of Diana’s story.” The source added, “Harry may be the son, but Meghan will be the voice viewers hear.”
Meghan Could Become The Face Of A Story That Is Not Hers
That may sound like a powerful opportunity on paper, but it could also become Meghan’s biggest problem.
Diana was Harry’s mother, but she was also Prince William’s mother, and that distinction matters enormously because William has spent years building his own relationship with her memory while avoiding the constant public excavation of the family drama surrounding her death.
A source claimed William sees the proposed project as “crossing a line that can’t be uncrossed,” while another alleged that the Waleses believe the Sussexes are once again capitalizing on their connection to the Royal Family. Those are claims from unnamed sources, not confirmed statements from William or his office, but they reveal the explosive argument surrounding the project.
And there is an obvious question Meghan may eventually have to answer: why her?
Harry can say he is honoring his mother’s legacy. He can say he is preserving memories of Diana for a new generation. He can say the project is deeply personal.
But the moment Meghan becomes the voice of that story, critics are likely to ask whether the documentary is really about Diana — or whether Diana is once again being placed at the center of a Sussex story.
William May See Meghan’s Role Very Differently
The tension becomes even more complicated because Harry himself has previously drawn comparisons between Meghan and Diana.
In the couple’s Netflix series, Harry spoke about similarities he sees between the two women, pointing to their “compassion,” “empathy,” “confidence” and “warmth.”
For Meghan, that comparison might be flattering.
For William, according to the media outlet, it may be precisely the opposite.
A source claimed William “can’t stand the narrative that Meghan is somehow this Diana 2.0.” Again, that is an allegation rather than a confirmed comment from the Prince of Wales, but it captures why Meghan’s reported involvement could be so explosive.
Because William does not have to make Diana part of a commercial production to demonstrate that she remains important to him.
He is her son. He carries her legacy simply by being who he is.
Harry May Have Given Meghan A Poisoned Chalice
That is what makes this reported role so fascinating. Harry may believe he is giving Meghan an important part in honoring his mother, but he could actually be placing her directly in the line of fire.
She could be accused of profiting from Diana’s memory. She could be accused of using Diana to generate publicity. And she could find herself caught between Harry’s desire to tell his mother’s story and William’s determination to protect the way Diana’s legacy is remembered.
The original documentary reports already suggested Harry’s project could create further friction with William and King Charles, with one earlier report saying Harry had discussed several possible projects and that Archewell Productions was likely to be involved.
So Meghan may have landed what looks like a glamorous role, but the real question is whether it is actually a poisoned chalice.
Because if she becomes the woman speaking for Diana, every word will be examined, every comparison will be dissected and every moment of the documentary will be measured against William’s own connection to his mother.
And suddenly, what Harry may have intended as a tribute could become something far more dangerous for Meghan Markle: a documentary where she cannot possibly win.
