Prince Harry and Meghan Markle appear to be sending a very clear message after facing a wave of criticism from some people in Britain and California, with the couple stepping out hand-in-hand for a relaxed pub lunch in the Cotswolds as they begin another chapter of their life in the UK.
The timing is hard to ignore. After weeks of reports describing disgruntled neighbours, complaints about security arrangements and claims that Meghan has struggled to win over some locals, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have now been photographed looking completely at ease together at a traditional Cotswolds pub. The pictures show them holding hands and walking into The Falkland Arms near Great Tew, where a pub source said they simply “acted like locals.”
It almost feels like a quiet response to everyone who has been waiting for their British comeback to unravel.
The Welcome Has Not Been As Warm As They Hoped
Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain was always going to attract attention, but some of the comments coming from their new surroundings have been remarkably harsh.
One reported local gave perhaps the bluntest assessment of all, saying: “People really just don’t like her.” Another report described Meghan’s presence as “terribly inconvenient and annoying,” while some locals were said to have suggested the Sussexes should have “stayed in America” and “kept their mouths shut.”
Those are not small criticisms. The Sussexes left Britain in 2020 and spent years building a life in California, surrounded by some of the biggest names in entertainment and celebrity culture. Their decision to return, therefore, has inevitably raised questions about whether they can actually settle into a quieter British existence.
And some Cotswolds residents appear to have made their feelings known.
A local named Rupert even described the couple’s reported uncertainty over whether to remain in Britain as looking “pathetic” if security arrangements do not go their way, while another report claimed some residents were angry about the level of security surrounding the family.
Meghan Has Been Warned About The School-Gate Test
Perhaps the most uncomfortable part of the backlash concerns Meghan’s attempt to become part of ordinary Cotswolds life.
Royal commentator and Cotswolds resident Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen warned that Meghan would need to be “very genuine” if she wanted to fit in.
“I think that’s the big moment here: the Cotswold folk can really sniff b——-, you know, they can really sniff when people aren’t being who they are,” he said.
He also issued a blunt warning about the local school mothers, saying: “I wouldn’t want to take them on, I wouldn’t want to p— them off, I can tell you now.”
His point was that the Cotswolds does not operate quite like Hollywood.
“Unlike in Montecito, they don’t have the celebrity safety net,” he said, referring to the couple’s former California surroundings and connections to figures such as Oprah Winfrey.
That may be precisely what Harry and Meghan are now discovering.
Then Harry And Meghan Made Their Move
Rather than responding publicly to every criticism, Harry and Meghan have done something much simpler. They went out.
They were photographed together at the pub, holding hands, smiling and appearing relaxed, with Harry wearing a baseball cap connected to his California life and Meghan choosing a casual outfit. They looked happy and enamored with each other. They reportedly enjoyed traditional British food, with Meghan ordering fish and chips and Harry choosing a pie.
The pub’s message was equally telling. “Everyone here gets the royal treatment – it doesn’t matter who you are,” a source said. “We’re lucky to get lots of different people visiting us, and everyone is treated like a local. When they visited, Harry and Meghan just acted like locals.”
That is almost the exact opposite of the image created by some of the recent criticism.
Instead of looking isolated, they looked comfortable.
Instead of looking as though they were preparing to leave Britain, they were out enjoying one of the most quintessentially British experiences possible.
And perhaps most importantly, they were together.
The Sussexes Are Not Going To Let The Critics Write Their Story
There is another reason the pub photographs matter.
Harry and Meghan have spent years complaining about unwanted media attention, yet their return to Britain guarantees that almost everything they do will be examined. Even these photographs have already prompted speculation from critics who questioned how photographers knew where they would be and whether the outing was arranged for publicity. Those claims remain speculation, and there is no established evidence that the couple arranged the photographs.
But whether the outing was spontaneous or carefully planned, the message coming from the Sussexes is difficult to miss. They are here. They are together.
And they appear determined to build a life in Britain despite the people who have already decided they do not belong.
The harshest voices may continue to complain about their security, their celebrity lifestyle or the attention surrounding them. Some neighbours may never warm to them, and some locals may continue to believe they should have remained in California.
But Harry and Meghan appear to be answering all of that without a dramatic statement.
They are simply carrying on. And after everything that has been said about them since they returned, that may be their most effective response yet.
