Kate Middleton made sure all eyes were on her as she arrived at Windsor Castle for a glittering state banquet, stepping out in a stunning yellow gown and a famous royal tiara on an evening when the headlines were already being pulled in different directions by Prince Harry’s latest revelations about his fractured family relationships.
The Princess of Wales joined Prince William, King Charles and Queen Camilla on Tuesday, October 20, as the Royal Family hosted Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said of Oman for a lavish banquet marking the first state visit by an Omani sultan to Britain in more than four decades. Yet while Harry’s emotional interview with GQ, in which he spoke openly about wanting to reconcile with his father and brother, was generating fresh discussion about the royal rift, Kate offered a very different image of the monarchy: poised, elegant and firmly focused on the occasion.
It was a reminder that, whatever else might be happening beyond the palace walls, the Princess of Wales knows how to command attention without saying a word.
Kate’s Yellow Gown and a Tiara With a Diana Connection
Kate chose a flowing butter-yellow gown by Lebanese designer Elie Saab, with a beautifully detailed neckline, a fitted bodice and a sheer cape that fell elegantly behind her. The soft, luminous color stood out against the grand surroundings of Windsor Castle, giving her an unmistakably regal appearance without making the look feel overly elaborate.
Her choice of jewelry was equally significant. The Princess of Wales opted for the breathtaking Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara. It is one of her most frequently worn royal headpieces. More importantly, the diamond-and-pearl tiara has a particularly poignant connection to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who also wore it on numerous occasions.
The tiara made for Queen Mary in 1914 features delicate arches and dangling pearls paired beautifully with her yellow gown, bringing a touch of royal tradition to an otherwise modern, elegant look.
The creation has become one of Kate’s signature accessories. She first wore it in 2015 and fell in love with the masterpiece.
Kate completed the ensemble with jewelry that included a diamond bracelet once belonging to Queen Elizabeth II, along with the Royal Family Order and the sash and star of the Royal Victorian Order.
Voilà — a royal fashion moment that needed little explanation.
A Royal Evening With More Than One Story
The banquet took place in St. George’s Hall at Windsor Castle, where approximately 160 guests gathered around a table stretching nearly 50 meters through the historic room. With Buckingham Palace undergoing renovations, Windsor has become an important setting for major royal occasions, and the evening offered a spectacular display of ceremony, diplomacy and royal tradition.
The dinner that was over 44 years in the making also reflected the relationship between Britain and Oman, with traditional Omani coffee served alongside British teas and carefully chosen decorative details adding a personal touch to the occasion.
For Kate, however, the evening was about more than flashing lights, small talks and fashion. Since announcing that her cancer was in remission in January 2025, she has gradually returned to a fuller program of royal engagements, including demanding state occasions where the expectations surrounding her appearance are particularly high.
Fashion director Bethan Holt previously told People that there is considerable pressure on Kate to deliver a memorable look at these events, describing it as part of the role she occupies as a senior royal and future queen.
The Princess has generally met those expectations through a careful balance of familiar royal traditions and subtle changes in her style.
Kate Keeps Her Focus as Harry Reopens Old Wounds
The timing of the banquet meant that Kate’s appearance unfolded alongside renewed attention on Harry’s relationship with King Charles and Prince William. In his GQ interview, the Duke of Sussex admitted that he was grieving the breakdown of those relationships, saying, “Yes, of course,” when asked about the emotional impact.
Harry also made his position clear with the words, “Some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out,” although his spokesperson later clarified that the comment was not intended as a swipe at Prince William or another member of the family.
The contrast was bluntly striking. While Prince Harry was speaking about his past, his trauma and the family’s unresolved pain, Kate was attending one of the monarchy’s most important diplomatic occasions, standing alongside William and the King as they welcomed an international guest.
There is no evidence that Harry intended his interview to overshadow the banquet, but the timing inevitably created competing royal headlines.
For Princess Catherine, the evening offered an opportunity to demonstrate the quiet confidence and sense of duty that have become central to her public role. In a gown that caught the light and a tiara steeped in royal history, she delivered a moment of elegance amid the continuing family drama.
The future queen made it clear: sometimes, l’élégance parle d’elle-même — elegance speaks for itself.
