Prince Harry may have made it clear that he wants to repair his fractured relationship with Prince William, but if the Duke of Sussex was hoping that his latest public appeal would soften his older brother’s position, the response from royal watchers suggests he may be facing a far colder reality, because after years of estrangement, William appears to have little appetite for turning a deeply personal family dispute into another public conversation.
The most striking part of this latest chapter is that Prince William does not need to issue a dramatic statement to make his position known. According to Tom Sykes, European Editor-at-Large for The Daily Beast and author of The Royalist Substack, William is unlikely to respond publicly to Harry’s comments, and that refusal to engage may itself be the clearest message he has to offer.
“Will William respond? I would be astonished if he responded publicly,” Sykes told Page Six. “He never does, and his silence is itself the response.”
It is an assessment that makes Harry’s latest attempt to speak about reconciliation particularly revealing, because while he has openly expressed a desire to make amends, William has given no public indication that he intends to meet that appeal with a response of his own.
Harry Makes His Plea — But William Is Not Answering
In an on-camera interview with GQ, Harry admitted that he wanted to repair the relationship with his estranged older brother, saying, “I want it to work out. Of course I do.”
He also argued that, with so much happening in the world, reconciliation should be a priority, adding, “With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”
Those words may sound like an invitation to put the past behind them, but Sykes suggested that the way Harry delivered his message could make reconciliation more difficult rather than bring it closer.
“Being lectured in public about reconciliation by the person who has caused the problem is exactly what William finds so hard to forgive,” Sykes said. “Putting the onus on him through the pages of a magazine is not how you repair a relationship.”
That is the central tension in this latest royal drama: Harry is speaking publicly about the need to reconcile, while William, according to Sykes, is unlikely to answer in the same public arena.
The Silence That Says More Than Words
Sykes also noted that the brothers have not spoken since 2022 and suggested that Harry’s GQ interview was unlikely to change that reality.
“Will it have frustrated him? I’m sure it will,” the journalist said, referring to William’s possible reaction to Harry’s remarks.
Still, the private feelings of either brother remain unconfirmed, and William has not publicly responded to the interview. What is clear is that Harry’s spokesperson pushed back against the suggestion that the Duke was directing a criticism at his family when he said that “some people don’t want it to work out.”
“It was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family,” the spokesperson said, explaining that the comment “was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way.”
That clarification matters because it shows how easily a general statement about reconciliation can become another source of tension and high drama when it involves two warring brothers whose relationship has been under intense public scrutiny since birth.
A Royal Reconciliation Still Far From Certain
For Harry, the public appeal may have been an attempt to show that the door to reconciliation remains open, but for William, the question may be less about what is said in an interview and more about whether anything can genuinely change behind closed doors.
There is no confirmed indication that William intends to respond, arrange a meeting or publicly acknowledge Harry’s plea, and Sykes’s comments suggest that a public declaration of hope is unlikely to be enough on its own.
Perhaps that is the most uncomfortable reality for Prince Harry: reconciliation cannot be achieved by one brother announcing that he wants it, especially when the other has not publicly signaled that he is ready to take the next step.
For now, Harry has made his position clear, William has remained silent, and the distance between them appears unresolved.
In royal affairs, silence can sometimes speak louder than a carefully worded statement. And for Prince Harry, the question is whether his brother’s silence marks a temporary pause — or a boundary that will take far more than a magazine interview to change.
