A black businessman named Botham Shem Jean, 26, was killed in his own apartment by a white police officer in Dallas, Texas.
The identity of the police officer has not been revealed to the media at the moment.
The bizarre and deadly shooting took place around 10 pm at South Side Flats, an upscale apartment complex located in Dallas.
In a press conference, Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall revealed that the officer is facing manslaughter charges and has been placed on administrative leave as the authorities work to understand what really took place.
Local media have revealed that the female police officer returned from work and went to the wrong floor and attempted to open the wrong door.
While forcing her key in her neighbor’s door, Botham came out, and she shot and killed him.
It is not known why the officer tried to enter someone’ else apartment. Some people say something fishy is going on or she was not well to reach to the point where she forgot where she lives.
According to two neighbors, who spoke to the media, they can access their units with a regular key or through a keypad code.
Caitlin Simpson said she heard the shooting and the police officer asking Botham to open the door.
The woman revealed: “It was, like, police talk: ”Open up! Open up!”’
Yazmine Hernandez, who also heard the noise the night of the incident, stated: “We heard cops yelling, but otherwise had no idea what was going on.”
According to his bio, Botham grew up on the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia and was working at the Water and Sewerage Company Inc., known as WASCO.
Botham’s former classmate, Landis Tindell, who went to college with him in Arkansas, said he was bright and a man of faith.
The friend revealed: “He was a campus leader. Very active in leading worship and campus student government. I don’t think there was a student on campus who didn’t know Botham. He was always friendly, always smiling, and just all around a great person.”
Botham came from a prominent family in Saint Lucia where many of his relatives worked as high-profile government officials. Many find the story odd and are demanding answers.
One person said the following about the sad event: “Apparently, not only did she have the wrong apartment door, she was on the wrong floor as well. Smh. That officer not slick. She deserves 25 to life. Dumb ahhh bih.”
Another commenter came up with this theory: “Inside job, she wanted him dead and plotted that. You don’t mistake your own home with someone else’s. Unless she gets dum high and was out of it.”
“This crazy story makes no sense no matter how you explain it!!! I’m sorry, but there is something she has to be lying about! Just another excuse to kill Another one of our Brothers in plain sight…shell get off BC she Has the color blue on her side this ish is Like 1930 all over we’re living Our ancestors Nightmare’s smfh trump got whites living their worse life… Damn R.I.P young man smh,” a mourner shared.
