A 911 call led to the killing of two police officers — Patrolman James Kevin White, 35; and Cpl. Zack Moak, 31 — in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
The shooter, Marquis Flowers, also known as Marquis Aaron Flowers, 25, was also injured during the incident and is currently at a local hospital.
The law enforcers were called to a house located at 630 North 6th Street after gunshots were heard.
Gunfire was exchanged at the scene and both White and Moak were hit. They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they died.
In a press conference, Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins got very emotional while talking about the two fallen heroes.
According to Collins, Moak and White were wearing bulletproof vests and carrying body and dashcam cameras.
Collins said that he does not know why the shooting broke out and went on to praise the duo by saying: “These were two awesome people who lost their lives in the line of duty and they’re both heroes.”
The Department of Public Safety’s Warren Strain had this to add: “This is what law enforcement does. They lay their lives on the line every single day for you and me, so we don’t have to.”
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that they along with multiple other agencies are working on the case.
Gov. Phil Bryant shared a brief tweet asking the public to pray “for the family and loved ones of these fallen heroes.”
Flowers and others have been interrogated about the deadly shooting. The gunman is quite known by police in the area, according to local media outlets.
In February of 2017, Flowers landed in trouble with the law after he failed to yield at a traffic stop and later led police officers on a high-speed chase.
The dangerous chase occurred while Flowers was wearing an electronic monitor due to the fact he was on probation.
He was arrested for vehicle burglary.
