The story of the missing 3-year-old Kamille McKinney — known as “Cupcake” to those around her — has reached a tragic conclusion, as authorities have confirmed that the young girl’s body has been found in a Birmingham, Alabama dumpster.
It has been around ten days since the girl was reported missing, and while the police are yet to confirm the identity of the body they have discovered, they have strong reasons to believe that it is indeed young Kamille.
At this point, authorities are investigating the potential involvement of two people, a man, 39-year-old Patrick Devone, and his girlfriend, Derick Irisha Brown, who have previously been pointed out as suspects in the case.
However, police now apparently have a stronger reason to believe that they might be involved in the case and are looking into that in more detail.
Police chief Patrick Smith said at a press conference: “We found the remains of a child that we believe to be Kamille.”
One of the facts that has prompted this response was the location where the body was discovered — the dumpster was reportedly not far from where the two lived.
The couple has denied any involvement in the horrible tragedy and has been communicating with authorities and the press through their attorneys, who have reiterated their clients’ pleas of innocence.
Smith also shared: “It only takes a split second. We can no longer assume that everyone is a part of the village that’s trying to raise the child. We cannot take those things for granted.”
He continued with: “I can tell you what we believe at this point. We believe that this was something that they thought about and acted upon, and they saw an opportunity to take a young child, which they did.”
Many questions remain lingering in the air around this case right now, and many people seem to suspect that observers are going to find out even more damning details not too long from now.
However, for now, authorities have been relatively quiet. They have been keeping a low profile about their investigation, which will likely continue to be the case in the near future until they have more solid leads.
One commenter stated: “So nobody was watching this little girl playing outside at a birthday party? Smh RIP.”
McKinney disappeared on October 12 during a birthday party.
