Upon her return to the White House in 2025, the former glamour model Melania Trump expressed her anticipation for a second act that would starkly contrast her first.
Donald Trump‘s wife had promised in an interview with Fox News that she would be more hands-on, active, and physically present for one of the world’s most prestigious and high-profile jobs.
She announced several initiatives and looked forward to modernizing her role and the White House. However, four months after Mr. Trump took office, Melania Trump vanished, and she was silently replaced by JD Vance‘s wife, Usha Vance.
Surprisingly, the former lawyer, Usha Vance, has assumed a more influential role in the Trump administration than her husband, JD Vance, the vice president. Her active participation in official visits and representation of the country has been significant.
Usha Vance has decided to carry Trump’s water by visiting Greenland, a territory Trump has said he wants to annex and colonize on numerous occasions.
Her visit was part of a diplomatic mission to explore the possibility of Greenland becoming a part of the United States. The mission, unfortunately, failed, highlighting the challenges in her role.
According to The Telegraph: “Experts say the former lawyer is thrust into the delegation, which shows she is shouldering some of the high-profile work Melania Trump would have normally taken. The First Lady has made just a handful of public appearances since January, leaving a soft power vacuum that the Second Lady has stepped in to fill. She has been clear about stepping back from Washington DC in her husband’s second term, instead splitting her time between Mar-a-Lago and New York.”
In 2017, Ivanka Trump loudly replaced Melania Trump as the first lady, attending almost all meetings and every state dinner with her father.
Ivanka Trump even changed the name of the First Lady’s office to the First Family’s office. The older Trump daughter’s decisions infuriated Melania Trump, creating a more significant divide between the socialite and former glamour model.
It is noteworthy that Melania Trump has gracefully accepted and embraced Usha Vance’s active participation in official visits and her representation of the country.
The reality is that Melania was upset that only one person had replaced her — Ivanka Trump — and she had no problem letting JD’s wife take her spot.
Melania Trump may have entirely accepted the second lady because she is not the person the media is selling. Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Vance might have more in common than previously thought.
A friend from her time at Cambridge University told The Telegraph: “She was left-leaning, cosmopolitan, and committed to improving the world. I certainly don’t remember any indication whatsoever that she harbored any far-right political views or would tolerate somebody who did.”
Melania Trump, in her memoir, opposes Republicans and her husband’s views on several issues, including abortion. Mrs. Vance’s private persona could lead to political disagreements with Mr. Trump.
