However, their educational backgrounds differ. Michelle Obama graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School, and Hillary Clinton from Wellesley College and Yale Law School. Both practiced law and had established careers before serving as First Ladies. Post-White House, Hillary Clinton took a phenomenal and historical career path, serving as a Senator for New York and later as Barack Obama’s Secretary of State, before becoming the first woman to win a major party’s presidential nomination.
Michelle Obama also accomplished a great feat after leaving Washington D.C. She became a highly influential public figure, author, and producer. Her memoir, Becoming, was a massive international bestseller, selling over 17 million copies and becoming one of the most successful memoirs in history. Mrs. Obama is the founder of the Girls Opportunity Alliance, an initiative of the Obama Foundation that works to empower adolescent girls through education. She has also continued her advocacy for voting rights through the organization When We All Vote.
The Putin Letter And The Public Rebuke
More recently, Melania Trump has taken steps to prove that she is her own person in the public sphere who can stand with Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Clinton. Motivated perhaps by a desire to establish her own legacy beyond her husband, she has suddenly shown interest in both foreign and domestic politics, including, notably, writing a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The letter, which her husband delivered, said in part: “Dear President Putin, Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart… Mr. Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter… Such a bold idea transcends all human division, and you, Mr. Putin, are fit to implement this vision with a stroke of the pen today. It is time.”
The letter’s vague message has been heavily criticized, leading to speculation that it may have been generated by an AI. Melania‘s plea, along with countless other requests sent to Putin from world leaders, likely ended up being disregarded. She was, of course, humiliated by this. However, there was even more embarrassment waiting for Melania Trump at home. She received a public dressing-down that will go down in history. The criticism was widespread, with Ana Navarro of The View slamming Melania’s attempt to intervene in Ukraine, calling it an act of “performative hypocrisy.”
The political commentator reportedly said: “Think about what her husband, what Donald Trump, is doing to the children of immigrants in America, and to U.S. citizen children of immigrants. How many of those children are living with the fear of their parents being dragged through the streets of America? Their car windows smashed in? Their parents beaten by masked men and disappeared? She added, “So Melania, it’s good you write a letter to Putin. Now, how about you write one to the man you sleep with… oh, wait,” a post that quickly went viral. Other political commentators dismissed Melania’s attempt by calling it a “word salad.”
A Controversial Move
Melania Trump appears to be determined and strong-willed, continuing to demonstrate her capability and engagement in political affairs. This may be why she reportedly made another public statement this week after a tragic shooting at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where deranged gunman Robin Westman opened fire while students were praying at Mass. Two children were killed and 17 others were injured.
In response to the tragedy, Melania Trump posted on X: “To prevent future tragedies, it is crucial we look into behavioral threat assessments across all levels of society. Being aware of these warning signs and acting quickly can save lives and make American communities safer.”
The message was met with criticism. Melania Trump was reportedly scrutinized for what critics called “selective amnesia.” Critics have pointed out that she is asking for help for those who are mentally suffering while seemingly forgetting that her husband has cut many programs that focus on mental health. For instance, the Trump administration has taken action to eliminate a billion dollars in mental health grants for schools and has proposed significant cuts to federal funding for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The administration has also overseen major cuts to Medicaid, a program that provides essential mental health services to millions of Americans.
Additionally, Trump and the Republicans have largely refused to do anything about gun control, instead prioritizing deregulation and a “law and order” narrative over new firearm restrictions. While some are criticizing Melania Trump for suddenly becoming political, others speculate that she may be getting involved in these matters to create a diversion. Some believe she might be aiming to shift attention away from Donald Trump’s health issues and the growing calls for the release of the Epstein files, which have recently been a focus of congressional action.
