Selena Gomez made a powerful statement regarding her wedding to Benny Blanco over the weekend, deciding to put her foot down about who would walk her down the aisle.
The former child star ultimately opted for her beloved grandfather to accompany her, before saying “I do” to the music producer.
Gomez is famously known for being extremely close to her two grandparents, who have reportedly been living with her for over six or seven years. While the bride was delighted to have her grandfather, David Michael Cornett, by her side on her special day, her mother and former manager, Mandy Teefey, was reportedly not thrilled.
Sources, who spoke to the Daily Mail, explained that Mandy was “extremely disappointed.” She was reportedly devastated that her daughter had not chosen her to walk her down the aisle.
The insider stated: “Selena’s mother and her stepfather Brian were shattered that she didn’t choose her mother to walk her down the aisle. In a shock move, she chose her grandfather David [Cornett], to give her away to Benny.”
The insider added that: “David and his wife Debbie broke down in tears of joy when she asked him. Selena made the decision as soon as they started planning the wedding.”
Family Ties, Business Battles
While Selena had worked very closely with her mother since she was a child and they were known to have a solid relationship, trouble had been brewing in the past few years. This tension reportedly stemmed from Selena’s mother allegedly mismanaging some of her businesses. It was not long ago that Teefey had to take out another mortgage on her home to pay staff members of the mental health startup, Wondermind, which she once started with Selena Gomez.
During this period, it has been reported that Selena has removed herself from the production company to focus on her successful beauty brand, Rare Beauty — which has made her a billionaire — and her acting career.
Despite the family tension, Gomez’s big day went on without a hitch. She said “I do” in Santa Barbara at a beautiful Montecito estate surrounded by palm trees, where a long list of celebrities attended.
Taylor Swift reportedly delivered a touching speech while co-stars including Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Paul Rudd were also present. Gomez later posted several pictures online of her enjoying her momentous day.
Mandy Teefey Publicly Responds To ‘Snub’ Claims
In an unexpected turn of events, Selena Gomez’s mother decided to quietly address the wedding drama, taking to social media. She revealed who walked her daughter down the aisle and confirmed her true feelings on Gomez’s decision.
She wrote: “It was a fairytale come true, and it was beyond heartwarming watching my father walk her down the aisle!!! XO. What a perfect celebration for the most kick ass couple I know. It has alos been confirmed that Selena Gomez’s biological father, Ricardo Joel Gomez was not present at the wedding despite the fact that a few years ago he was sharing photos on social media showing that he and his daughter had reconciled.
