King Charles III had a private father-son conversation with the heir to the throne, Prince William, amid both his and Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnoses.
In that meeting between the two men, it was revealed that there was a generational rift over royal duty. During that time, Prince William gave an interview in which he said it was the hardest year and sought to reduce engagements to focus on family.
The King delivered a pointed, two-word reply. This decisive moment underscored the monarchy’s priority of duty and signalled a shift in William’s future.
The Heir’s Plea for Slowdown
Following the “huge shock” of Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and subsequent heavy chemotherapy, Prince William found himself in the agonizing position of balancing the pressures of public office with caring for his wife and their three young children.
The heir to the throne later described the ordeal as “brutal… the hardest year of my life” in an interview with The Times journalist Kate Mansey.
Royal author Robert Jobson, in his new book The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty, recounts how his wife’s crisis pushed Prince William to have a very passionate private conversation with his father, who was also undergoing cancer treatment.
Prince William explained to His Majesty that he needed to ease his workload for the sake of his health. William suggested the King should “slow down and listen to his medical team.” Prince William went on to explain to his father that he also would pull back from the heavy workload and constant travelling across the UK and the world. The heir confessed that he needed to dedicate himself fully to his family. This was a clear request to the Monarch. William proposed scaling back his own royal engagements to just ten for the year, hoping to prioritise family life and recovery.
The King’s Two-Word Rebuke
King Charles, who is often described as non-BS like his mother and sister, however, was having none of it. The King was quick to remind his older son that he spent his entire life, more than 30 years, preparing for the role of Monarch. The defying patriarch and King, his sense of duty remained absolute, even as he battled his own illness. The author states that the King, viewing his son’s suggestion as a sign of wavering commitment to the Crown, delivered a sharp, two-word response that cut straight to the core of the issue. Queen Camilla herself has confirmed the King’s mindset, stating publicly that her husband is a workaholic and “won’t slow down and won’t do what he’s told,” despite his health challenges.

Despite their differing views and minor dispute on how to handle their respective health challenges and work commitments, there was a silver lining to their painful experience.
Sources told the author that the challenging months have strengthened the bond between father and son. King Charles expressed support for his daughter-in-law, Princess Kate, and acknowledged her “courage and resilience,” which was notable given his own treatment.
Jobson wrote that: “Like William, he became a ‘beacon of strength’ to the princess. The two had a private one-to-one lunch at Windsor Castle the day before Catherine’s pre-recorded video was aired.”
At this private meeting, father and son offered each other mutual support. After the Princess of Wales’s video was shown, Charles immediately issued a Palace statement saying he was “so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did.”
The King Changes The Course of The Heir
King Charles’s curt response served as a forceful reminder of the heavy, non-negotiable duties of the heir and the Monarch. It appears Prince William has taken his father’s “Think again” directive to heart. Prince William has since confirmed that his father might have changed the course of his future reign. Prince William, who was planning to become reclusive at his new home, Forest Lodge, has done a full 180 and has undertaken dozens of engagements, showcasing his presence both at home and abroad.
Prince William seems to have confirmed that King Charles’s words have changed his path. The Prince of Wales has significantly increased his workload in recent months, with major engagements including visiting Northern Wales ahead of the Tusk Awards and opening the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds. He also fulfilled several key duties at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, including attending the Diplomatic Reception, hosting a Royal Foundation meeting, receiving the Chief of the Defence Staff, and participating in a joint engagement with Princess Kate in September.
There is no slowing down for the royal couple, who are planning a long list of engagements and royal tours, including in the US next year. Princess Kate, after removing herself from the public eye for almost a year to focus on her health, is also back to her duties, following a careful, measured pace, having confirmed she is in remission.
She had a meeting with the families of the victims of the Southport stabbings in October, which marked her first official post-treatment engagement. Furthermore, she continues to champion her key causes, including holding an early years meeting for her “Shaping Us” campaign, issuing a message of support for Addiction Awareness Week, and attending a Service of Thanksgiving for the 80th anniversary of VE Day earlier in May.
Princess Kate will be on hosting duty for her upcoming Annual Christmas Carol Concert at Westminster Abbey in December 2025. King Charles might have rewritten the institution’s history with two words, dramatically halting Prince William’s plan to scale back duties and instead securing a renewed commitment to the Crown and the British people.
